Beth,

Hello. My son , non RSS, is going to be receiving OT services this

fall partly to deal with SI problems. I'm not too educated about it but

I do see in his daily life how this affects him and how it's hard for

him to integrate in certain social situations. I've been letting him do

Lite Brite, riding a Big Wheel, giving him calming massaging especially

on his back, and I offer him many small motor exercises such as cutting,

stringing beads, painting our bricks with water, picking up things with

tongs, tweezers, and clothespins. These small motor activities seem to

help him focus and settle down.

Anyway, I'm new to this too, but it would be interesting to maybe follow

this through the year and possibly share strategies.

School, IEP etc - Matt H. update LONG

Hi all!

I have been around checking on the list when I can but I wanted to

catch you up a little on Matt. It has been a busy end of summer as

school started August 9th here in Georgia. We enrolled him in a

couple of weeks at the end of last year and got the IEP ball rolling

but all the testing has been done this year. He had a very rough

week the first week, but seems to be settling into his routine.

He is in private OT for Sensory Integration Disorder, which I think

is a big piece of his school issues. We are now doing brushing,

trampoline, soon to start with a listening program and have an

appointment with a behavioral opthalmologist. It all seems a

little " hokus pokus " if you know what I mean, but it is worth a try.

The IEP meeting today was really great, and I can't believe what an

awesome school district we are in. Matt qualifies for a learning

disability and will be pulled out for some special ed time each day,

and speech twice a week. They are also going to have him evaluated

by the school OT. I am a little concerned about all the time away

from the class, but we all think if we address some issues

aggresively, we may see much improvement.

While it is nice to finally have the professionals say that there is

something identifiably wrong with his learning and behavior, it is

equally hard to hear. I am sure many of you can relate!

On the good side, he seems to be gaining weight with the Duocal

powder and frequent peanut butter snacks. I think this kid gets

about 700 calories a day in P.B. alone. He started cross country

and seemed to like it and is looking forward to turning 8 in October.

Our new house is coming together, we just need to decide on some new

paint colors for the inside and decide about some minor remodeling.

It has been a busy summer, moving is always hard, but we are

fortunate to have great friends here to help, and great friends on

this list to listen! Thank you all!

I would LOVE to hear any success stories, or any thing that might be

related to SID.

-Hi Beth we are neighbors and I didn't even know it, I am in

Tennessee. has SID and ODD and OCD we do the brushing every

two hours (when we can) but they are doing it at school to,

's routine sounds just like yours with getting the speech and

Ot at school. He isn't wanting to go in the morning's but once he is

there he is o.k. They say his behavior has been o.k. to ,but he

hasn't recieved any stickers for it yet, we took a behavior class

for a year (they don't last that long) But still has issues.

We are trying we have a big therapy ball, trampoline(small one) and

the best thing for our kids are putty (sensory)or you can use silly

putty , he loves it when he starts getting out of control out comes

the putty and it does work. Well e-mail me privatley if you would

like Remember we talked not to long ago and if you remember B from

last years convention you see how he was wild!! Talk to you soon

Hugs
