Sheryl,

I don't know if this will help, she'll still gag and cry afterwards, but my

son is 9.5mos and I get him to open his mouth by acting like I'm giving him his

pacifier (rubbing it against his lips) then putting the medicine in really

quick, He gets mad as soon as I do it, but we don't have to fight to get it in

there, and he doesn't cry as long afterwards. I hope this helps!

Sheryl,

My son did exactly the same thing at that age. The nurse at the Dr.

office didn't believe me until she tried to give him his oral

polio!!! She never gave me grief about it again.

What I did was add his meds to a bottle with only about one or two

ounces in it. This was the ONLY way I could get him to take any meds!

I hope this helps. The doc wasn't happy about adding meds to formula,

but when they experienced how he took meds any other way, they

stopped complaining!

Blessings,

Carmen

Hi Sheryl,

Thankfully Olivia has always taken her meds pretty well for us but

she's been on them since birth so she doesn't really know any

different. I don't know if Dalia (beautiful name!) takes a bottle

or soother but when Olivia was a baby we would put her meds in the

nipple (not attached to the bottle) and " feed " it to her when she

was hungry right before a feed. If Dalia takes a soother, I've seen

in drugstores a soother in which you can put meds into the soother

nipple, it's not meant for all day use, just for medicine time. I'm

not sure if this will help but it's another suggestion!

Is she teething also maybe? Olivia was not into food or sleeping

when she was cutting some of her teeth and a little tylenol sure

helped, not a full dose where she would get sleepy but just enough

to take the edge off, she loves wet face cloths that I froze in the

freezer as well.

Take care!

Sheryl - Sorry you're having a bad day - we have all been there. My mother

taught me how to give all my children their medicine by doing this: A 2 person

team - one holds baby - arms and head, the other squeezes cheeks, inserts the

dropper, then rub under her chin. This works like a charm every time - they

can't spit it out with their cheeks smooched together and the rub stimulates a

swallow. Sounds mean but it works. My mother is talented that she can do all

this by herself butI usually have a partner in crime. Hope this works for you!

P.S. Did you get your valium? Jane - mom to 10 months, 12lb 7oz, 24 1/4 "

Sheryl -- She is so young it makes it even harder with the meds.

First of all, I have a non-RSS son who has NEVER been able to take

liquid meds by mouth. As an infant, he would gag, etc. we would

hold him down, force open his mouth and hold it open until he had to

swallow, all the while crying. For ear infections, we learned to

simply skip the oral meds and go right to the shots!!!! Antibiotic

shot, quick and done.

So, on that note, I would go in and talk with a good pharmacist. I

have found that the mom and pop pharmacies are the best, I no longer

go to SavOn or anything like that. Ask them if there is anyway to

concentrate the medicine so that you have to give her LESS volume.

Second, there is flavoring available. The problem though is that at

7 1/2 months, you won't know what she will like.

The reflux med Zantac is absolutely HORRIBLE. takes it and

despises it. I tasted it, and she is right, GAG!!!! We add it to a

small amount of purple grape juice which helps a little bit.

Oh, I feel for you. Jenn

Another thing to do is once the medicine is in the mouth, if you blow

in the person's face, they have a reflex that will cause them to

swallow. It will not make the child happy, but it will go down. I

do not know a way to stop them from gagging it up, however. Also,

there are some flavorings a pharmacist can add to improve the flavor

of the meds and if you are using Zantac, I highly recommend improving

it. I don't know if you have tasted the medications, but Zantac is

just horrible tasting. I might gag too if I had to take it. :)
