Guest guest
I am an graduate student and I have a 2 year old student that has rss. I would like to know any educational methods that have been used for kids with rss that have produced positive outcomes. Anything would be helpful. As of yesterday I was unfamiliar with rss. The student that I am working with is very smart and eager to learn so I am anxious in getting started. Thanks for your help!
Guest guest
- I don't know what type of student she is of yours. When you refer to educational methods, is she is a preschool with you, or is it OT or PT? If you can give a bit more clarity, we can refer you to the right person. To start off, go to www.magicfoundation.org and read everything there about RSS. We'll try and refer you to the right person. Guest guest
Hi I want to " double " what wrote to you. I am a special ed. teacher as well as a mom with an RSS son. I think your one main goal is to teach this student independence. You want him/her to be able to do the same things that other 2 year olds can do. Expect that he/she will do it, teach it if you have to and modify the environment (stools, lower coat hooks etc) as necessary. Also going along those lines you would want to build in some strategies to give her assistance without labeling " she can't do it " . For example if it's clean up time and you just know the bin is way to heavy for your student to lift and return to the shelf, you might change routines to have a " lifter " helper. And everyone else (that being everyone not just the RSS kid) leaves the bins right under the shelf while the lifter comes by and puts them away. That way you are not singling her/him out as having a problem. Otherwise, depending on the specific needs of the child (anything else besides RSS? are there any feeding tubes?) that would be the main teaching strategy you should strive for. Oh and RSS kids need to eat often. Again, think of a way to build that into his/her day. Congratulations by the way on looking into this syndrome. You must be one terrific teacher.........we have many, many parents on this site and all our kids go to school (that are of age) and you are the first teacher we have had to find out about RSS. I wish the others were as keen as you! Debby Student with RSS > > I am an graduate student and I have a 2 year old student that has > rss. Guest guest
Hi , Thanks for making the effort to do research on one of your students. That is a very rare and wonderful thing you are doing. I am not an educator so I cannot give much advice other than to determine what the needs of the child are and to try and make him/her as much a typical student as all the others. He/she may need some Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy or Speech Therapy. RSS kids are usually on track with their peers emotionally, socially, and intellectually. You may have to make some class room accomadtions for them but try and make them as inconspicuos as possible. There are several on this list who are teachers and special ed teachers. I am sure they can give much better advice than I can. Hope this helps. Ken M > I am an graduate student and I have a 2 year old student that has > rss.
