Guest guest
SGA in and of itself is not a form of dwarfism. It is an assignment made upon a child's birth based on their birth or their length being 2 or more standard deviations below the mean (roughly below 5lb 5 oz or 17.5 inches, corrected for gestational age). IUGR is where there is ALSO at least two ultrasounds indicating that a child is growing slower than expected (either slower than siblings or from aveage). Roughly 93% of children born small for gestational age catchup in weight and length by age 2 (about 85%+/- catch up by age 1). But it is the 7% of SGA-born children who do not catch-up that are called short SGA or idiopathic SGA. This group of children has really been studied in the last 5-8 years primarily. And the gut dysmotility of these children studied very little. I think as genetics/science develops in the next 10 years, you will find out that they are all intrinsically linked, and maybe a " name " will be given to these children. Guest guest
Dear , You mean some other name than: Small, skinny, but normal kid. I had wondered about the gut motility issues with SGA. , I suppose, does not technically fit that diagnosis since he weighed 5lbs 6oz at birth, however, it seems to me that in every other way, he fits. I also figured out from your post why he was never diagnosed IUGR. He didn't have two ultrasounds. This comes from being born at the county hospital, I suppose. has certainly never had any catch-up growth. He is now 29 months old, 22 lbs and 33.5 inches tall. I have wondered if SGA kids are supposed to be checked for gastric emptying times like RSS kids. Do you know?
