Hi all. We have some updates from the enzymesandautism message board

at: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/enzymesandautism

If you have been on the diet for awhile, you may want to add enzymes

to your supplement program. Several families who have been 100% GFCF

for over 9 months or more, found that simply adding certain digestive

enzymes gave many improvments with the diet.

Several parents have talked about the sheer relief of being able to

go out to a restaurant or wedding or party and being able to relax

while their child ate GFCF food - they weren't worrying about

contamination.

Some families are finding that even though they are GFCF, the enzymes

are allowing them to expand their menu by adding back in

other " problematic " foods, examples are: corn, phenols, and potatoes.

If you are new to the diet, enzymes may help you to get started. A

couple members commented on the added insurance of their child being

more GFCF as they learnes the ropes of doing the diet, and as their

family adjusts to the changes.

If you have been on the diet and are looking to " cheat " a little,

many families are finding they can do this very successfully with

certain enzymes. We have had a few families saying their initial

trials were " not 100% great, but not as bad as before. " How you feel

about the concept of " infractions " is totally an individual matter.

If you have been on the diet and didn't see great improvement, you

may want to try enzymes to see if this will help " pick up " any

hiddens that are hard, if not impossible to identify. Several

families attribute increased improvement to this.

If you feel you want to " throw in the towel " you may want to try

enzymes to see if this option will help your child improve. A few

families have been able to leave the GFCF diet entirely (6 weeks to

date).

I personally feel no one option will help everyone in exactly the

same way. We have some reports on the enzyme board of people saying

their child or themselves had a not-very-positive reaction. Some have

better luck with a different enzyme product, and a couple say it

doesn't look like enzymes will work for them (Those families are

currently experimenting with different doses, and with certain

foods.) It works for many, but as with everything, every person is an

individual and a little different.

All I am trying to say is that it is a viable option for many, and

one to consider, especially if you are looking for options. I do not

want to undermine or discourage anyone from being 100% GFCF because

obviously that has helped many people. Each of us knows our family

best. Everyone is welcome to bring their questions or just lurk.

Since beginning 3 weeks ago, the enzymeandautism board provides:

-over 200 members and 1000 posts

-many, many success stories

-several not-so-success stories

-several polls

-several side-effects of using enzymes and what to do about them

-an updated handout Parents Guide to Selecting Enzyme Products

-dosing and use guidelines

-technical information, practical information

-a great bunch of smart, thoughtful, and concerned parents

-discussion of ANY enzyme product, used in ANY way

thank you, and I promise not to give another update for another 6

weeks. ;)

Several of the documents are in the FILES section. Here is the direct

link. I notice this board does not have a FILES section.

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/enzymesandautism/files/

It is in the yellow box to your immediate left under Home, Messages,

Post, Chat, Files, Polls, etc.

thank you.
