I have it for a long time. Yet I've just been diagnosed. So does that mean

I've had active Graves' before and didn't know it?

You are welcome, Sandy.

My best friend since 1978 has had gray hair since before 1982. Every time

she has any kind of illness, I always question her about symptoms and make sure

that they tested her thyroid, because I know that this may be a possibility

for her in the future.

I don't have any family history of Graves, but there is Hashi's from my mom's

cousins and my dad had gray hair before the age of 30, as did I.

My husband has alopecia areata, another of the autoimmune disorders that is

closely linked with the autoimmune disorders associated with Graves. I

attribute his disorder to his mother, who has been totally gray since my husband

was

in middle school.

Sandy,

I am sorry to hear about the loss that you went thru at such a young age.

One of my best friends died of a massive heart attack 2 years ago, at the age of

34, and I am still not over it. I know the stress of that situation, and the

deaths of 2 of my dear uncles 2 months prior to that, contributed to my GD

symptoms.

, thank you so much for posting this. It reminds me of when i got my 'grey

patch' in the front of my hair. I was in my 30's and my first hubby had passed

away from heart disease. I also have a 27 yr old son who is majorly overweight,

and he's got more grey hair than I've ever seen on any young man. I've

mentioned that I've heard of this to him, but had no proof to back up what I was

trying to tell him.

Here is an article from Allthyroid that talks about gray hair:

I had a grey patch, not streak appear when I was about 35. My first hubby had

died, and I honestly thought it was from the stress of having two sons to raise

on my own. I remember somebody finding a very light colored hair which we

suspected was actually grey, long before I had this happen though. The article

just posted the link to says just 1 grey hair so I have to wonder now. My

first grey hair was when I was very young, in my early 20's. I remember my

first hubby telling me I was gonna have a head full of grey hair. I have tons

of grey in my hair now, and I don't color it, but I'm also 49 now. Wasn't

diagnosed hyperT/Graves till Nov/Dec of 2001.

Since my oldest son who is now 27 has mucho grey hair, I've sent the link to him

in email. He's been diagnosed with high blood pressure for years now. :-(

I've also been told that recently he went off Atenolol which is what the dr had

put him on for his high blood pressure. He and his wife have a book on 'health

remedies' and that part scares me to death. I think since Atenolol is so cheap,

no reason for him to go off of it, as it helped his blood pressure, even though

they have no insurance since the Enron layoff. He worries me constantly these

days since my dad also had high blood pressure and didn't take his meds, which

caused his death at age 42, cerebral hemmorragh (sp).

The first health sign i had was high blood pressure, along with weight gain, and

sleepless nights. My son is showing those same signs. ughhh

My weight (and I'm talking big numbers too) is finally starting to come

off! I noticed that my daughter had such success with the Suzanne Somers

diet (lost 20 lbs. she put on when she starting carbo-loading after

becoming lactose intolerant, AND her complexion is perfect) that I

decided to try combining foods and minimizing carbs. I've also been

walking 2 miles at a time a few times a week.

I'm also 5'4 " and remember telling my GYN about my ATD weight gain.

Somewhere along the line he lost track and said something like, OK, you

weigh 200 lbs. I told him, No, I weigh 220. His jaw dropped and he said,

You don't weigh 220! (one of the reasons I like this guy. Also, he's not

petite himself so he knows what 200 is.) Now I'm down to near 200 and

frankly will settle for 160. (My kids can take some of the blame for

that.) Like the TSH, the numbers on the scale are useful but how you look

and feel are what count!

Take care, Fay

Wow, this thread about grey hair is pretty enteristing.

I have a couple of strands in my hair.

I've had them before the graves diagnosis.

Its actually more than two now.

I'll be checking on this thread.

Hi ,

I think this is interesting, too.

To add a tidbit, my hair began turning white in my twenties. I'm 49,

now, and quite white-haired. But -- I don't have thyroid disease, it's

my daughter Lillie who has GD. At 17, she has no gray hair, thank

goodness! (though I shouldn't be TOO sure -- it's purple right now!)

I think the article said that the trait for thyroid disease runs in

families with the gene for premature gray hair?

I've got grey streaks now at my temples. Nowhere else, just there. And they

appeared weeks after I was diagnosed with Graves'. So I call them my

" Graves' hairs " instead of my grey hairs. I'm thinking of dyeing them pink.

Can you dye just your temples? :)
