Guest guest
Hi Yvonne, I have to second that the folks at the ER missed the problem, that high thyroid levels are causing you heart symptoms. I spent six miserable weeks between the time my GP noticed my thyroid levels were too high and the day I got in to see the endocrinologist, and all the while my heart rate and blood pressure continued to increase. Worst was trying to sleep at night, as my heart was jumping and pounding. My GP should have started me on a beta blocker right then, or at least consulted with the endo. Instead she tried to get me in for a nuclear test of blood flow through my kidneys because my heart sounded so loud to her. (I declined). But fortunately she also eventually got me in to see a top-notch endocrinologist, so from that point things started to get better. I did cause damage to my heart (thickened valve), and I'm sorry I didn't get on heart meds sooner. I was very hyper at the time and wasn't sleeping well or making the best decisions, so I feel my GP dropped the ball (and changed GPs). Simon noted some time back that the easiest way to locate Graves' in one's ancestors is to identify the ones who died young of an unexplained heart condition. I sympathize that this is bad timing for you with a trip planned etc. For myself, even at age 49 I planned to get healthier and stronger every day, so the entire adventure (since last summer) has been--well, quite an adventure. Hope you feel better soon, B. (my middle name's Yvonne, for my French-Belgian grandmother)
