Pam--

thank you very much for the concern. You guys are great- the er dr

did an ekg and a chest xray blood work but im not sure what-- wish i

had read that last post about what to have him run but i was already

on my way. My heart is fine -- says it is just stress--which i know

to be true--got a lot of stuff going on im my life personally--with

the biggest issue right now being my daughter going to live with her

father this weekend. :( I have an apt with my reg dr and i will be

taking some info with me and asking for beta blockers. I am

determined to fight this without destroying anything permanently. I

have made my mind up in that respect. Thank you all for you posts

and help-- it is nice to talk to someone who knows what im going

through. gives me confidence and peace. Love and light to you all.

Yvonne,

First off, I'm glad your heart is fine. However, no one here was suggesting

there was something wrong with your heart. Unfortunately, it sounds like

you had a wasted trip to the ER, as if that is all the doctor did and said,

he was looking in the wrong place! You needed a thyroid work-up (and

specifically for Graves'), not a cardiac evaluation. Did he say anything

about your thyroid?? Or your eye symptoms??

Stress cannot make your TSH decrease to .02. However, stress can trigger

Graves', and Graves' can cause your TSH to be .02. I have found that in our

health care, we need to be proactive -- getting informed, asking for what

we need, and ultimate making decisions for ourselves with regard to

treatment options. I know it would be an inconvenience, but any chance

you'd be willing to go back and get them to have someone who knows

something about endocrinology (preferably an endocrinologist) evaluate you?

Graves' is not some rare or mysterious disease, so someone at the hospital

should be able to diagnose you and offer you an ATD and a beta blocker, if

your test results confirm that you have Graves' and need them.

P.S. I'm glad you won't let them destroy anything permanently. Especially

at this point, when you haven't even been tried on medication. Many (and

perhaps most) people do well with the meds, and if that doesn't help, you

can research and consider a more definitive (permanent) treatment later on.

Personally, I would have surgery done before RAI, as RAI can trigger or

worsen eye symptoms in 15-30% of people, amongst other problems. I don't

see RAI in my future. However, every doctor I ran into so far said that RAI

ablation would be their #1 choice; one of those doctors actually said it

was " required " in this handout he gave me, and he wouldn't even consider

giving me medication (he also said no surgeon would touch me, as I don't

have a goiter -- I guess he thinks he can speak for all surgeons). The

other doctor gave me the meds, and so far so good.
