Guest guest
Hi Carole, There's an eye component to Graves' disease, which your daughter's doctors should be aware of. Her sore eyes could well be a symptom. The carbimazole should help (it's more effective if you split it into two daily doses rather than one). Also, it's important that your daughter not be allowed to become hypothyroid, as that can make her eyes worse. Using lots of artificial tears drops can help. Also, may people have gotten some relief by taking a source of essential fatty acids, such as flax seed oil, either in capsules or bottled (and refrigerated). A useful reference book is Elaine 's Graves' Disease: A Practical Guide, which you can order from Amazon.com. It explains the eye disease as well. It must be confusing for a growing girl to have to deal with the Graves' mood swings; she's lucky you're there to help. Best wishes, B. Guest guest
Hi , Thanks for your reply. The doctors are aware of the eye disease . My problem is I believe she has it. Not full blown but she use to get a eye that bulged slightly I never connected it until she was diagnosed with Graves. I always thought it was her allergies. I have told the doctors this. My problem is because they don't see any problems with her eyes when they are checking them they say she doesn't have it. Or since on the medication has it gone away I say yes and they go well don't worry about it. I will be trying the artificial tear drops to find out if they help the next time she suffers from sore eyes. I have ordered a copy of Elaine's book but it takes 6 to 8 weeks to get here so hopefully I will have it in the next week or so. When she first started taking carbimazole we had been told to split the dose but when she went on to one tablet we just let her have it at night and then 1 1/2 tablets we kept it at night because we were told it didn't matter I am going to split the dose and see if it makes a difference. Do you know if I split the tablets and give one in the morning and 1/2 at night say and I missed the morning tablet would it hurt to give it with the one at night or am I best to just miss the tablet all together?
