Guest guest
Just thought I would update you all on my latest doctor's appointment! I went to the high risk ob yesterday (not the normal one I usually see, who is a wonderful woman, this one is a man and apparently judgmental:)). Although they have not changed my meds themselves, as most of you know, I have decreased to 25 mgs. PTU every 8 hours. If it were up to these docs (actually just the one I saw yesterday) I would be taking 150 mgs PTU every 8 hours. I have been honest about my dosage reductions with the other doctor and have seemed to have no problem with her. Her philosophy has been " as long as you feel good and get regular blood work, then I am okay with you cutting your dose " . So, anyway, I tell the nurse at the beginning of my visit that I had new labs done the week before and have cut my dose according to the new numbers and the fact that I have been feeling sluggish and achy. As soon as he walks into the room he informs me that WE will NOT change my dose again for the remainder of the pregnancy (I am nearly 26 weeks) as my thyroid is going to act up after I deliver. He then continues on during his version of an ultrasound (the tech had already done an indepth one, but the doctor usually takes some time to look around too, if he looked at the screen for more than five seconds, I missed it) that once I deliver my regular doctor who takes care of my thyroid can just get rid of my thyroid so that I won't have graves' anymore. I just kind of shrugged and said I don't think so. He asked me what I had against RAI and I informed him that there were a lot of reasons that I had and that I have done quite a bit of research on the topic. He continued to question me on it and I told him that the main reason was that graves' is autoimmune so by killing my thyroid it really wouldn't take care of " ridding me of graves' " . He said " no, but you also won't die from a heart attack if you have RAI " . I responded with " I won't die from a heart attack if I remain med compliant either " . We ended the appointment with him saying that they would not be seeing me in their again and that my regular ob should just do my labs every four weeks and that I would be fine. I am sure that the reason I am no longer " high risk " is due to the fact that Dr. Wonderful is put off by the fact that I have taken control of my own healthcare and that of my child and that, apparently, I haven't followed his advice and stayed on the ridiculously high dosage of meds that he has prescribed. Oh, and the fact that I do not agree with his opinion. But, how do they justify the fact that I have been made to attend these " high risk " appointments every 4 - 6 weeks so far during my pregnancy and now, by some miracle, the last 14 weeks are going to be risk free and there is nothing to worry about? Sorry if this has been rambling and long, but I am getting worked up again just thinking about it! Thanks for letting me vent! Lori
