Hi,

Hot off of the Medscape press, a nice review article on hypospadius

in the newborn. It also includes a very exentsive reference section,

including research on the link between SGA and hypospadius.

Here is one excerpt from the article:

" Supporting and Educating Parents

The parents of the newborn with hypospadias are likely to have many

questions about the condition.[43] An opportunity for the parents to

meet with the pediatric urologist should be provided as early as

possible. Assure parents that they will be able to talk with a

pediatric urologist, either during the hospital stay or shortly

thereafter as an outpatient.

The most pressing question many parents have is whether or not their

infant can still be circumcised.[43] Although the circumcision will

not be done during the hospital stay, as is customary, the surgical

repair of hypospadias results in the appearance of a penis that has

been circumcised.[43] For families who desire their child's foreskin

to remain intact, the procedure can be modified to allow this.

Parents can be reassured that in most cases, the atypical urethral

placement does not affect urination in infants, and it does not

signify an underlying problem with the bladder or kidneys.[8] In

cases of more severe forms of hypospadias, such as penoscrotal or

perineal hypospadias, parents can expect additional testing to rule

out a problem in the androgen metabolism pathway, an androgen

receptor defect, or a chromosomal abnormality.

Some families will ask how hypospadias happens.[43,44] Technology-

oriented families will research hypospadias on the Internet and find

volumes of information about hypospadias. Some of the sites accessed

may provide misinformation that could lead parents to believe they

might have played a role in causing their infant's hypospadias.

Reassure parents that with the possible exception of some familial

cases, experts have no explanation for the precise cause of

hypospadias.[9,26] "
