Clair,

We've had this discussion before, you could probably do a search in the

archives. It was a pretty extensive discussion, and I think the result was

that we mostly thought it best not to. It was a few years back, and there

may have been more to the discussion than I remember, though.

Clair, my endocrinologist says it's ok to give blood. The blood bank

accepts me with my med's (I had RAI several years ago and take synthroid).

I just don't go as often cuz I don't recover as quickly as I use to. This

was a topic a year or so ago, and some say our blood is poison, but I've

been given to the ok to give.

Thanks for the info everyone. I couldn't find anything in the

archives so I did a quick net search and found this little blurb on

About.com:

" Graves' disease or hyperthyroidism patients who are on antithyroid

medicines, or who are not currently in normal thyroid range, cannot

give blood. "

It said Synthroid is fine, but ATDs are not. And even though I did

not see PTU on the list of medications that are not acceptable for

blood donations, I assume since it is an ATD I cannot give blood.

Thanks so much for your help.
