Guest guest
I found an old recipe that I used to make as a substitute for Cool Whip (again, from The Tightwad Gazette). It is relatively cheap to make, and it is pretty easy and quick. I haven't tried substitutions yet, but I'm going to. My son hated the Hip Whip, but he used to like this recipe. If any of you try this with subs and like it, let me know which of all the subs you used were successful. Whipped Topping 1 tsp. unflavored gelatin (could experiment substituting pectin) 2 tsp. cold water 3 TBSP. boiling water 1/2 c. ice water 1/2 c. dry milk powder (I'm going to try a powdered substitute) 3 TBSP. sugar 3 TBSP. oil Chill a small bowl. Soften gelatin in the cold water, then add the boiling water, stirring until the gelatin is completely dissolved. Cool until tepid (lukewarm). Place the ice water and milk powder in the chilled bowl. Beat at high speed until it forms peaks. While still beating, add the sugar, then the oil, then the gelatin. Place in the freezer for about 15 minutes, then transfer to the refrigerator. Stir before using. Makes 2 cups.
