Guest guest
Hi Everyone, I was wondering if anyone is having trouble with the FERPA regualtions. It seems our school systems has adopted these regulations and are using them against us. We want to observe our son in his small group O/T and speech therapy sessions. We need to see how he is socializing in small groups. It is one of his problem areas. The school is saying that under the FERPA regulations that we cannot observe our son because it violates the confidentiality of the other child in the therapy group. We say that they are wrong or a whole list of reasons, mostly because the regulations only address a child's records and not the child. We have contacted a couple of state agencies that oversee the school systems in our state. They agree with us but are reluctant to write a letter to the school explaining our rights as parents. We are still working on this. It has been over a year but we are now close to a solution ( I hope ). You might want to call your school and ask to observe a therapy session and see what happens.
