Guest guest
<<Hello everyone! We had an IEP meeting & they suggests a 5 day full day program for . He turns 3 on Sept. The problem is that my son doesn't do very well at all separating from us. We think that the full day program is not going to work. WE don't want him to feel unloved & abandoned by letting him cry all day for many days, so he will get use to the school. We're thinking that a regular half day nursery school will be better for him. Then we can have someone come in for ABA Therapy couple of times a week. NOt sure the school district will agree to pay for it though Anyway, I have been reading posts here about a shadow or aide for their children. How do you find one? What are the circumstances you would or you use one? I need help! My son is diagnosed last March & everything seemed so very overwhelming ever since.>> ~yhen Hi yhen, My son was diagnosed in January, PDD or Mild ASD. He is now 3y5m. We are GFCF (and many others-free) now 3 weeks. He has attended a special preschool half day, with OT and Speech since February. He will be going to a six week summer program with the same half-day as now, with a 1 to 1 aide, and 2 hours ABA after school. He will be keeping the aide, and going to a full-day, TEACCH/ABA class in the Fall. I requested a meeting with the school to review his progress, and plan for summer and fall. They agreed with my recommendations, and the CPSE did also at the IEP meeting. (The ABCs of Special Education). Your son gets home ABA now? or no service? My son was also very attached to me. It was very hard to let go (for both of us). First I went with him to visit school, then longer and longer visits, then I drove him the first week he actually started. After that he rode the bus. (he fortunately loves the bus, so this is a good transition from home to school) Email me privately if you want any more specific info. I am also a preschool special education teacher. I am at home now with the boys (also a 1y5m old son) but used to be doing ABA for others. Some irony, huh? Good Luck! ~ in NY Mom to and PS - I thought it was good to start my son with a half day program. Now he moves on to whole day, but we hope to have him go to regular school with a shadow eventually.
