Guest guest
Hey , Thanks for your helpful insite. :-) I don't really know what they looked at in the biopsy that confirmed Hashimotos.....I'll have to ask my endo when I see him early next month. But he was pretty sure that was what they would find when he sent it off to the lab....perhaps he specifically asked them to check for something other than cancer? I think that is what he believes has enlarged my thyroid. So if you go hypo, you say you do thryoid horomone replacement. Would that be in conjunction with continuing to take the ATD drug? Is that the block and replace therapy I've seen mentioned on the board? Oh my.....I feel like Alice thru the looking glass....curiouser and curiouser! Hopefully once I get out of hyper and into the " zone " of normal for me, I won't swing the other way. I don't much like how the hyper is making me feel and from what I've seen shared hypo is even worse for some so I'd just as soon pass on that, thank you very much! LOL My multi is really good I tell ya! It even has selenium in it.....the RDA of 70 mcg. I loathe brazil nuts! Yuckky!!!! Not sure why, they just are not something I would enjoy eating, so I'm glad my multi has me covered. :-)It is the one that has the zinc and copper at about a 7 to 1 ratio.....so there is no way I could cut back on the zinc with that. Perhaps I should just eliminate the extra 2 mg. of copper I was taking to bring the ratio down a bit. I thought I read somewhere that a 5 to 1 is better, so that is why I added the extra bit. It's so tricky trying to get these vitamins and minerals to all balance out! I appreciate your taking the time to share your thoughts with me . Have you heard back from the doctor yet with your lab results? I'm keeping you in my prayers. Have a wonderful day.
Guest guest
Hi , I have hashi's and graves. It is truly a balancing act. I have found that certain foods at different times affect me different ways. For example, I can eat shellfish without problems and then at other times, I feel horrible. I'm interested in what the others tell you about the minerals/vitamins, etc. Good luck! Ann Marie got the word on my biopsy and now have even more questions Hi All, Just heard from the endo's office last night that I do not have cancer! Yeah! So that is happy news. But the results did show that I have Hashimotos as well as Graves. I know it's possible to have both, but I'm wondering about how to manage both at once as far as lifestyle, because isn't what is good for the one bad for the other? Do you still need to avoid iodine, or am I not getting enough iodine? Should I eat the foods that suppress my thyroid or try to avoid them? Does that impact my vitamin supplements? Should I try to up my zinc? I'm on a multi that has about a 7 to 1 ratio of zinc to copper, and I have also been taking an extra 2 mg. of copper so that brings it down to about a 6 or 5 to 1 ratio. Should this change? Yikes! It is so hard to figure out this balancing act. The endo's office said my treatment will stay the same, she just confirmed when I asked her that the goal is still to use the ATD's to get to the target normal zone for myself where I feel good and God willing go into remission. Advice, comments and observations are welcome! :-) I also saw an ophthalmologist this week, and I do have a mild case of the TED. My right eye is about 2 mm further out than my left. I just knew something was up as it has felt so weird these past few months. He was very encouraging though.....said my prognosis is very good as I don't have anything going on with my optic nerve and I'm not seeing double or anything like that right now; and he'd be surprised if it got worse, and in fact felt it would improve as my thyroid improves. Let's pray so! I have to go back for a couple more tests in 2 weeks.....one is measure how dry my eyes are, and the other is some field vision test I think he said. Apart from the flaxseed oil, should I do any eye exercises? What else can I do to help keep my eyes from getting worse and/or reverse what's going on? He did change the eye drops I was using and said to use the Genteal gel at night, and continue using the Refresh tears during the day....at least every 2-3 hours. Thanks again for all the knowledge and generosity in sharing it that you all display. Keep on fighting the good fight everybody!
Guest guest
Hi , Thank goodness about your not having cancer! Glad to hear it! As for being told you have Hashi's, I'm curious on what basis. Was it because you have TPO antibodies, or some other indicator? I am new to this, but from what I understand, thyroid disease is a " spectrum " disorder, and it is possible to swing from hyper to hypO (people can have Graves' and Hashi's at different times). Perhaps it is a matter of what is being expressed at the time, as in what symptoms predominate at any one point in time. So if you are hyper right now, I think you would continue your treatment for Graves'. I don't know of any specific treatment for Hashi's (unless you are hypO, and that would entail adding thyroid hormone replacement), though have read that selenium (100-200mcg/day) can help with the TPO antibodies. I also read that brazil nuts are loaded with selenium, and you probably only would need a very small amount (as in 1/8 to 1/4 of an ounce), but you don't want too much selenium, as it can be toxic in higher quantities. I am still learning about this stuff myself, as I also have TPO antibodies, and selenium may reduce inflammation. Anyway, I don't imagine it would hurt to have a brazil nut or two! Also, if it were me, I would be careful about adding too much copper (i.e., no more than 2 mg per day in supplement form), regardless of what's going on; to me, I wouldn't want to take above 100% RDA of anything, even if it is a " balancing of the ratio. " Better to cut the zinc, I think. These are just my thoughts. Take care, At 12:48 PM 7/16/2003 -0400, you wrote: >Hi All, > >Just heard from the endo's office last night that I do not have cancer! Guest guest
Hi - Good news about your biopsy! What a relief! I'm also in the Grave's and Hashi's club. It is a balancing act and really all the doctors can do is treat the one that is predominanting at the time. As for 's question about how they determined that you have Hashi's...I'm assuming when they did the biopsy, the thyroid cells must have shown evidence of Hashi's. If I recall correctly from reading about Hashi's on www.thyroidmanager.org, a biopsy of the thyroid tissue would contain Hurthle (sp?) cells. Might also have seen fibrosis.
