Short version: many of us have had our children on DMSA with or without ALA for a year or more; many of us believe that heavy metals are the major factor in autism, necessitating the gfcf diet and causing numerous other problems such as immune dysfunction There are even a few kids who have recovered from chelation, and I know of no one who has not improved on it, but it is a long slow process so the verdict isn't in yet. DMSA is approved for pediatric removal of lead, so if your son is high in that, insurance should pay for it. Might even pay for it otherwise, if your doctor prescribes it and you are otherwise lucky. I never tried secretin for my son, but am even more excited about chelation than I have been about the diet. I think the diet prevented or reduced further damage, made learning in a regular setting possible, and made my children ready for chelation. But chelation, I hope, is what will bring my son back as far as he can come until stem cell therapy or something similar is developed for autism.
