Determining remission

Hi all,

I need some help educating my endo, who's been great up till now but wants me to

wean off PTU, after a year (next fall), without any antibody tests. (She

diagnosed my Graves' last fall based on a general antibody test for autoimmune

thyroid disease, no TSI.)

I'm planning to call before my fall visit and ask for a TSI test. If she balks

I'll go looking for some research to back up my request, but maybe she'll just

agree (I know my GP is also an option but would rather keep using the endo if

possible). I have an HMO, which paid $950 for an unnecessary Hep. B test last

summer, so they should cover TSI.

I have moderate TED, and this is where I get confused. Could my Graves' ever be

in remission while I still have eye symptoms? In this case would remission mean

a lack of stimulating antibodies and thus no more need for PTU? That would still

leave me with blocking TSH receptor antibodies, which would continue to affect

my eyes and have the potential to make me hypo, but at that point continuing to

treat with PTU and Synthroid would be more controversial, I guess. Should I get

the stimulating and blocking antibody types measured separately?

Since June I've been happily euthyroid on 100 mg PTU and 50 mcg Synthroid and

would love to stay this way for a while! Thanks for the help,

B.
