Guest guest
Mimi and everyone - Every one of our children who is getting a blood draw or a major shot should be able to use EMLA or Ela-Max. Poor Isaac and poor you!!!! Both products are numbing cream, that you put on about 30 minutes or longer before the " event " -- and a plastic bandage gets placed over it (or you can simply wrap saran wrap over it). You go into the doctor or the blood draw early, and ask them where they are going to do the draw. then you place the cream, and go for a walk somewhere. It numbs the skin. EMLA is prescriptive. From family referrals, it seems to work deeper, and works better at 30 minutes or longer. However, it is vasicular constricting (makes the veins smaller) so if you have a child whose veins tend to collapse or are small anyway, you may not have the best luck with this one. ELA-MAX is over the counter, although you will have to probably ask the pharmacist to order it. Amount -- in a small tube you might use the size of 2 quarters. This product tends to work a bit faster than EMLA I have heard, but doesn't go as deep, but it NOT non- vasicular constricting. We have used both for . It is such a psychological boost as well. We used it at home first, to show her how it " numbed " her skin. Then she was so much more relaxed. Now when she has to have an IV or something, she asks for her cream. Without the cream, I have to hold her down screaming. I know it doesn't hurt as much, but because she is screaming and clenching, it makes the pain more, and makes it harder to get the blood draw or the IV in. Katy and I try and include this info in every MAGIC newsletter but I know that it probably gets missed as it is at the end of our section. I would HIGHLY recommend using this for Isaac. > Hi all- > > Just need to vent and ask a question..but first the vent part! > > We are in the process of selling our home and looking for a new > place to live which is sooo stressful and I am now workin 3, 8 hour > days per week. And on my days " off " we have endocrine appts, > pediatric weight checks, etc, etc. Since Isaac has hypothyroidism > they have to check his TSH levels every other month which means that > have to draw blood.
