Hi ,

My endocrinologist is part of a well-respected endocrine practice in my state's

capital. She told me that all three options for Graves' (with surgery being the

third) had drawbacks and mentioned antithyroid meds as the first choice of the

three. She cautioned me to get a blood test done any time I had a sore throat or

fever to watch for the dangerous side effects. But she also said she'd had only

two cases of side effects on ATDs, one with liver problems and the other with

agranulocytosis (the white blood cell problem), and that both individuals had

recovered.

This doctor is familiar with current research on Graves', so I think her opinion

is as valid (or more so) than what you're being told. I know it's tough to have

to argue with your doctors when you're sick, and I know I'm really lucky on that

score.

Best wishes,

B.
