with iron replacement therapy....The shots (IV) aren't at all hard on

my veins as I just finished my 13th one a few minutes ago. Many people

get irritated veins from phenergan or certain antibiotics and even

morphine, but the iron dextran hasn't bothered my veins in the least

little bit. The injection (ONE!!!) in my hip was horribly sore to

touch (still is) and that was the first and only one I got about 2.5

months ago. The iron that isn't absorbed well by our stomachs is the

oral iron b/c we are lacking the intrinsic factor necessary to absorb

it. You don't need gastric intrinsic factor to absorb it from your

bloodstream. As a matter of fact, my hemoglobin was 6.2 when I started

these infusions and after 10, it was up to 10.2 (2 weeks ago).

I'm simply going off of what my doctors are telling me - I'd much rather take

pills 2 times a day then have to have shots every week! Sorry if I offended

anyone by my comments but last I checked this was an informational group with

several different opinions/experiences.

Since having the infusions(last one was in December) and taking the added

iron pills everyday my iron has managed to stay above 11 for 6 months - I have

to

say that accounts for something and it's a whole lot more than the shots ever

did for me.

Best of luck to you with the shots! I'll stick to my pills!

Rene,

I think you may have read my reply wrong as you seem to have taken

offense to it. I think if you'll re-read it, you'll see that I didn't

say " Infusions are the best and the only way anyone should get their

iron. " I, myself, didn't like the intramuscular injections because the

site where I've only one weeks ago, still hurts like it was given

yesterday. I have no problem with people taking pills 2 times a day,

but pills didn't work for ME. I wanted to advocate that the iron

hasn't bothered *my* veins at all so others in here wouldn't be scared

of the harmfulness to their veins if that is the way they are choosing

to go. I was taking a medication that SUPPRESSED MY BONE MARROW, hence

what little of the pills the stomach did absorb, the other pill was

suppressing my marrow not to produce any RBC's. I could not take the

easy way with just taking my vitamins. The Feso4 325mg I was taking 3

times a day did nothing but stop my intestines and bowels from moving.

It's much simpler and easier to pop a pill than to go through the IV

process, but with the suppression, it did not work for ME. It's time

consuming etc etc etc, but I have no other option at this point, since

I felt near death (from one complication or another), the little pills

did not work for me (yes, my own personal experience).

You say you are going off what your Dr's told you. I don't doubt

they say a pill is better than the IV, but from my experience, it's

" not hard on my veins " and medically speaking, it IS abosrbed well

through the bloodstream not the stomach, therefore if they say it

isn't absorbed as well as by mouth, I'd like to see their study on

that. I was replying to your part about your Doctors saying " I would

try to get your doctor to go with pills before the shots - evidently

the shots are hard on the veins and we don't absorb it as well.... "

because this wasn't true in my case. You cannot take the iron

infusions AND take oral iron, it's one or the other; one must be

stopped first before starting the other. I fully intend to use iron

pills again when I get back to a 15 hemoglobin level and stop the

infusions.

This is " an informational group with several different

opinions/experiences " . That's why I began my message with " speaking

from personal experience " and why I ended my message with " JME "

meaning, " just my experience "
