Guest guest
Hi, I'm new to this group. I had RNY 6/12/03. My due date is 12/9/04. I've had a few issues with the pregnancy and am wondering if anyone else has had similar situations and can offer any friendly advice. I came down with mono around the same time I conceived. The pregnancy hormones triggered IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) add to that morning sickness. I wasn't keeping vitamins or anything down and was working full time but missing a lot. With everything going on the first trimester I lost weight, couldn't keep vitamins or supplements down and lost what muscle mass I had left to the baby who needed the protien. My iron dropped and my blood pressure kept dropping so I'd feel like passing out/exhausted. Now that I'm in the second trimester my blood pressure drops less often and the IBS seems to be gone for now and the morning sickness has lightened. I can tolerate prenatals but can not tolerate a Multivitamin plus prenatal that my doc. suggested. The combination causes severe stomach upset, I've tried different times of day and with and without meals. This last month I can no longer tolerate milk. Just had my 1 year RNY labs done and my protien and B12 are down but I'm not surprised under the circumstances. I had an OB apt. yesterday and my doc. says I'm " spilling " sugar in my urine. He wanted to do a Gestational Diabetes Test but as I can't do the standard one without becoming violently ill from dumping he's not sure how to do it. He had a blood test done that's supposed to give him my average Blood Sugar Reading over the last 2 months. Has anyone been in a similar situation? Any advice? What Gestational Diabetes Screening if any did your doc. use? Any advice for upping Protien when dairy is out? Thanks,
Guest guest
The test your doctor did was probabally the hemoglobin A1C and it gives a good idea of the average blood sugar buit is not acurate as to how your body handels sugars after eating. Your averave might be OK but you may have some very high readings after eating and some very low lows once your insuline kicks in. That is not too healthy for you or the baby if it is happening. Instead of doing the glucose tollerance test that you will dump on and is not accurate for RNY patients you could have your doctor do a fasting blood sugar test then eat a regular breakfast for you - wait 1-2 hours and then take the blood sugar again. That will give a better idea if you need further monitoring or testing. Another option is to get a glucometer and test your self in the am before breakfast then 1 hour after eating - before lunch then 1 hour after eating - before dinner and 1 hour after eating and before bed. after a couple of days of this you will get a very accurate idea of how your body is handeling food and your sugar levels. Many pharmacys will give you the glucometer free when you buy the test strips which can run from $50-$100. Your doctor may also be able to give you one to monitor yourself for a week. Good luck either way the results will tell you how to have a healthy pregnancy. As for the protein thing could you do protein drinks or bars in between meals? I love the Nectar drinks you can get on line and also the detour bars you can get all kinds of places like Wal mart. Beef jerkey or nuts are a good easy snack loaded with protein also. You'll work it out and find whats best for you. - Diane > Hi, > > I'm new to this group. I had RNY 6/12/03. Guest guest
Welcome to the group!! I didn't have gestational diabetes this last pregnancy but had it with my last one 10 years. I would suggest for protein stuff like any meat you can tolerate, tuna fish and peanut butter.
