Guest guest
Hi Robin, Welcome to the board and congrats on both the pregnancy and the weight loss following your VBG! I too had a VBG May 2003 and lost 104lb in the first 9 mos post op. My surgeon gave us the green light to start trying at 9-12mos post op, and lo and behold...miracle upon miracle, we got pregnant the first try in Feb 2004. We had fertility issues for yrs, but getting the weight off did the trick for me... About the weight thing during pregnancy...Us VBG'ers are different from the RNY/bypass pts during surgery in that we do not have a malabsorptive component to our surgeries, so we are less at risk for some of the complications they seem to have. That being said, because of the banding, our intake is lower and need to eat small frequent meals... The first few months of my pregnancy, I actually lost a few lbs due to the morning sickness. I am now 24 weeks and have been gaining steadily for the past 10 or so weeks...But Robin, no matter how hard it is to see the scale go up in lbs, you have to try and wrap your head around the fact that its a GOOD THING....That gaining weight will help the baby become healthy and strong..That you won't wreck your surgery if you follow the " rules " we were given post op, and that the weight WILL come off... My weight gain has been right on target with women who have not had WLS, so by the end of it, I expect I will have gained about 30-35 lbs...and if its a few more, then I will not beat myself up about it...My pregnancy starting weight was close to goal tho, so you may find that you continue to lose a bit or plateau for awhile... Whatever the case, just be kind to yourself, okay? I had a lot of cravings earlier in the pregnancy and have to admit that I indulged in a few of them. Its mentally so hard to go from being so disciplined in not eating sweets to craving them left right and centre. I almost feel like my body/mind is betraying me...and when I have indulged, the guilt sometimes gets me...But I am getting better about the guilt thing too...and the cravings aren't so bad any more...For awhile there, I felt I could eat a DQ Blizzard or 7/11 slurpee every day...lol... Best of luck to you, Robin...and again, congratulations...Look forward to seeing more posts soon. And feel free to email me if you like, okay? EDC Nov 10/04 > Hi there. Guest guest
Thanks for the email. I talked to my surgeon today, even though I was really nervous to let him know the news.... but he was actually really happy for us. As I was leaving his office he told me that he was made a grandfather for the first time very recently. ;-) The OB's nurse told me that I really need to work on getting 2000 calories a day. Is this what others have experienced? I don't think my OB or her office is very experienced with people having WLS. But my WLS surgeon said today that he was going to call my OB. So I assume he means he is going to make sure she's with the program..... So, I talked to the OB nurse yesterday and they confirmed I'm definitely pregnant (I had only gone to my regular physician last week and then yesterday I had a blood test at the OB office). They think I'm about 5 weeks. AND she said my progesterone level was very low. She said that the norm is 25 and mine was 8. So they are putting me on some progesterone suppositories. Has anyone else had this experience? She kept telling me not to worry, and I'm trying really hard not to. I'm trying to take good care of myself. And my husband's doing a good job, too. :-) Robin Irwin VBG 9/17/03 Starting wt: 293 Current wt: 229 Goal wt: 165 EDD: 3/22/05 Re: Intro ----> New Robin Hi Robin, Welcome to the board and congrats on both the pregnancy and the weight loss following your VBG! Has anyone else had this experience? She Hi Robin, I just got off the suppositories (pun intended) My prog. levels were pretty low too, 6.9 at 6 weeks, 9.5 at 7 weeks and up to 13 by 7 1/2 weeks since then they haven't been anything to worry about. I'm sensitive to peanuts since the bypass so the pills were out of the question. The suppositories were annoying but hey, anything for the baby's sake right? Just be sure to eat some fiber because they do tend to constipate you. I found an apple or two a day helped a lot. My doc told me that by week 13 the placenta fully takes over so in most cases they aren't needed after then. hope this info helps Colleen
