Guest guest
Hey everyone, This group is great and so helpful to get info because it is so hard to find stuff out there. I had my Gastric Bypass on 07/14/03 and am now 9 weeks pregnant. My surgeon Dr. NEstor De la Cruz-Munoz in Miami, FL told me I could gain up to 10 lbs., however my OB/GYN Dr. Klein said that ideally I should not gain a single pound and weight 220 lbs. on date of delivery. That the baby would still be healthy and would get its nutrients from my fat?? Has anyone ever heard this or should I get a new OB/GYN? 360/220 Jill W. Guest guest
Congrats Jill on your pregnancy and your fantastic weight - loss! For me.. I started this pregnancy 10 weeks post op... and I was about 220lbs.... I went down to 200lbs... and now back up to 206lbs... a 3lb gain this month. I am 22.5 weeks. I started pre op at 262lbs... and have 75lbs left to go. Within the last week or so.. I have developed a HUGE appetite.. and realized that my once low tolerance/no tolerance for sugar has disappeared. I CRAVE it now.. and it has been a struggle. So.. lately I have been snacking every couple of hours... and have changed my diet to softer foods... bascially cottage cheese with a bit of strawberry jam or apple butter... (fat free). I have cut out the breads , rice, pasta.... as they are getting stuck now... and I don't need them.. LOL My OB has had Lap RNY last year.. lucky me Anyhow.. she is happy with my few lbs I gained last month...and isn't making my weight an issue.. UNLESS I lose in LARGE amounts. My face and arms have gotten much thinner looking... the few lbs I have gained back has got to be baby weight/fluid.. etc. I would just concentrate on healthy eating and healthy baby... of course.. easier said then done.. : K in Ft Lauderdale Mommy to: Noah - 10/14/02 Jonah - edd 11/18/04 http://www.love-my-kids.com WEIGHT GAIN QUESTION - NEW TO GROUP That the baby would still be healthy and would get its nutrients from my fat?? Guest guest
I was 15 months post-op when I got pregnant and my ob wanted me to gain 10 to 15 pounds. My surgeon said that because I was only 15 months post-op I probably wont not gain anything. I gained 4 pounds and then lost 2 in my 8th month. My daughter was fine! Good luck!!! Guest guest
Jill, Many women on this board have gotten pregnant soon after their WLS and a couple were even pregnant before their WLS. Some as soon as 4 or 7 weeks afterward and the baby's did excellent throughout pregnancy and delivery, so never fear. Concentrate on your vitamins, minerals, protein, B12, folic acid and getting in your H2O. Note that you must take calcium citrate (not Caltrate, calcium carbonate, no Viactiv chews etc). I was 3 yrs out from WLS and gained just 18# that was lost within 2 weeks of delivery. I wasn't able to breastfeed as I had nutrient-poot breastmilk. Best wishes & welcome!! You'll do fine! Guest guest
Sheila, I'm curious... who decided that you have " nutrient-poor breastmilk " ? How did they determine that? Guest guest
, You prob have missed my multitude of postings about my nutritional deficienices that I have endured since getting pregnant and delivering. Long story short, after 2 weeks of nothing but breastmilk, my baby lost from 6# 9oz to 6# 2oz and despite everything I could do & per every LaLeche coach/consultant, my peditrician said it was in the baby's best interest to be started on formula asap. At the 3 week checkup he had gained to 7-3 and the 4 week check up he was 8-1. Now, he is 21 months, 35 " tall and 30# (no longer deficient I assure you!) I am currently getting IV iron infusions (14th one tomorrow) to correct my iron/hemoglobin deficiencies. I have seen 7 MD's and 2 dentists who advise no more pregnancies for me. I am currently awaiting an appointment with an ortho MD and a rheumatologist to plan how to care for my " metabolic bone disease " as a result of the WLS. All bu 4 of my teeth decalcified during the pregnancy and all of these problems were on top of taking my PN vits and 2 Flintstones a day. Not your common post-WLS preg and outcome, but unfortunately, it was mine. My OB recently asked me if he could give my phone # to all future post WLS preg patients that he has so I can discuss my case/outcome with them. So, long story short.... my whole body was nutrient poor not just my breastmilk. Sheila
Guest guest
Sheila, You're right, I missed your postings. However, I am wondering... were you osteoporitic or osteopenic before you got pregnant? Anemic? How were your complete sets of labs before you got pregnant? I think it's very unlikely that the pregnancy CAUSED all of these problems, and I'd like to know that for a fact; I advise many post-ops on breastfeeding issues, and in general. I run a support group of 1200 people, plus a second one for post-ops who are breastfeeding. In my experience, your situation is very much atypical... I'm glad for others but I'm very sorry that this happened to you. Guest guest
I had my 10 week check yesterday and my OB said that I shouldn't gain any weight either. That is normal. With my first son I weighted in over 350 and only gained 17 pounds with him. Now that I had surgery, the doc said he would just like me to stay the same. The nurse told me on the first visit they like their patients to gain 30 pounds. I thought she was crazy, but I guess a normal sized women should gain that much. I was relived when he said not to gain a pound. But he is right the baby will take what it needs, you just have to take your vitamins and take care of yourself. Good luck. From personal experience, I can say that it is possible to have a healthy baby without gaining any weight. When I got pregnant with my daughter, before my weight loss surgery, I weighed 230. The day I had her, I weighed 225. My OB was never worried about me not gaining any weight, and my daughter was born at a healthy 8 lbs. 2 ozs.! I would concentrate on trying to eat healthy and not try to focus on gaining or losing weight. Best Wishes! Guest guest
You shouldn't feel bad. You were a year out and probably close to your goal weight. Which would mean that you were a normal sized woman? I am only almost 4 months out of surgery. I have about another 100 pounds to go. Don't feel bad just think of that beautiful baby. Guest guest
I had surgery the same day you did and now I am 32 weks pregnant. Both doctors could be right - the fact is everybodys body is different. I weighed 202 on the weekend I got pregnant and went down to 181 before I started gaining - I now weigh 201 so I call that a gain of 20 lbs so far - my doctors call it no gain at all because they go from the inital weight. I don't think you should get a different doc just because of the weight comment - what is most important is that you trust him and feel comfortable with your doc. Good Luck and congrats on the new life growing inside of you. - Diane > Hey everyone, > > This group is great and so helpful to get info because it is so hard > to find stuff out there. Guest guest
Congrats on your blessing, Jill:-). Welcome! Hmmm, I'm not in the med field, but as a fellow preggo, I say babies are first! There was an excellent discussion about this earlier on this group, talking about the importance of carbs when it comes to baby's brain development. & that ketosis was unhealthy for preggos. Believe me,I had fallen off the protein wagon, even before conceiving. & thank the Good Lord, my bb is 5 days bigger than his gestational age, so he's growing like a champ. Keep us updated. PS The paralegal in me tells me that docs aren't G-d, so feel free to get 2nd & 3rd opinions:-) WlsMomma 18 weeks, 2 days
