Guest guest
This test WILL make you DUMP and could be DANGEROUS!! RNY post-ops should NEVER do a glucose tolerance test FOR ANY REASON. As your doctor to draw fasting glucose levels instead, and take this article to your doctor. http://www.gastricbypass.com/images/GBP%20-%20Pregnancy.pdf and ask him to read the information on page 463. AGAIN, DO NOT have glucose tolerance testing done FOR ANY REASON, EVER, after RNY. Z Open RNY 09/17/01 Nervous about the Glucose test...drinking the stuff To: ossg-pregnant Hi All! I am 18 weeks and I am going to get my Glucose test and ultrasound next Wednesday. I have to drink a WHOLE bottle of that stuff and I am scared to death of what this is going to do to me. My Doc. knows all about my surgery, but still wants me to do the test. I don't dump from chocolate, but I do dump from milk, cereal, and things like that. Anyone out there take the test and how did it affect you? I mean if you get too much sugar too fast 1. Wouldn't that show up in the blood test as diabetes and 2. Could it make me go into some kind of sugar shock or something. Thanks for any advice. (http://lilypie.com/)

Guest guest
Hello ! I am 36 weeks along and I did take the glucose test. I told my doctor my concerns with dumping; I gave her the article as well that we have on this site for her reference. I had borderline gestational diabetes with my son 10 years ago so she thought it was very important that I at least try the glucose test and if I did get sick then we would try other options. I am 3.5 years out from my open RNY and I did the test with no problems but that is just my experience. Not that I wasn't concerned going in but I wanted to at least try... It tastes much better than it did 10 years ago-- not as thick as syrup like I remembered... it literally did taste like orange crush to me and went down easily! Surprisingly I didn't dump or get sick from it either which was a shock as I do from sugar (candy) over 20 grams. I would just do whatever you feel is right and if that means to take the test then do so but also if you don't want to take it-- stick up to your doctor and say no! I know, easier said than done. Guest guest
I took this test pre-op. It tasted like orange soda - sweet orange soda. It had no effect on me, and that's how we learned that I am insulin resistant and have PCOS. I wouldn't take it post op though - I work VERY hard to avoid sugar and to not dump!! Guest guest
post ops aren't supposed to drink that much glucose/. It SHOULD make you very ill. It depends upon the type and length bypassed. It made me ill BEFORE WLS and I refused it after WLS. Since having WLS, the results are invalid anyway, (according to my WLS and OB) Sheila
Guest guest
My surgeon says to absolutely not take it - they can test your glucose by fasting and it won't affect you with the dumping, etc. Good Luck!
Guest guest
I have not had a problem with dumping, but they just suggest we dont do it in case there will be that one time.... Rene
Guest guest
Since I am unable to do the glucose testing by drinking the liquid, my OB sent me home with a glucose monitor and I have to take my blood sugar several times a day. Maybe that would be an option for the people that have dumping really bad like myself. ~e --- sij2003@... wrote: > Hello ! > I am 36 weeks along and I did take the glucose test. > I told my doctor my concerns with dumping; I gave > her the article as well that we have on this site > for her reference. Guest guest
My surgeon advised me NOT to drink that stuff. Instead get a blood test.
Guest guest
Run, , from the glucola crappola. Unless you can tolerate 50 grams of sugar with no prob. @ my 1st appt, 7 weeks pg, the NP agreed with my informed refusal. So do my OB's. I asked my OB if I could take the two hour fasting test as mentioned in the article, but he said that the fasting test wasn't as accurate as the glucose tolerance test. I told him that it would definitely make me dump and his response was " Well, you better hope you don't fail the 50g test because then you'll have to take the 100g test. " I guess you just have to know him to see that that remark really wasn't as insensitive as it sounded. Anyway, I took the test last week. Yes, I dumped, just as I knew I would. It made me very dizzy, and I had to go lay down before I passed out. I was able to have my blood drawn an hour later, and I drove myself home. The results came back normal. Was it worth it? To me, yes. I didn't have to " rock the boat " with my OB, nor did I have to find another one since this one has delivered both of my older children. But, I would urge anyone else to try to get around it if they can. If you can't get around it, like me, well, all I can say is. . . I'm glad it's over!
