,

I'm SO SORRY that you were given this misinformation by your doctor!

You did NOT need to wean to get back on antidepressants.

This is the definitive source of information on drugs for

breastfeeding women:

http://www.bflrc.com/products/books & media/Med & MotMilk/Med & MotMilk_all.htm

My copy is at work, but I know that he says that most antidepressants

are safe for nursing women and their babies.

Re: Antidepressants during pregnancy?

Hi,

I was on antideppressants both times when I conceived and through the

first trimester since my pregs. don't show positive on tests until the

second trimester. My doctors told me to get off the antideppressants

as soon as they found out I was pregnant. The last one I was on was

Zoloft. They said there's just not enough research to tell them the

exact risk potential because it's not ethical to do tests on pregnant

women. They just monitored me during the preg. and deppression wasn't

a bid issue during pregnancy however postpardum it did become an

issue. I did nurse. I used St. 's Wort while nursing the first

time around but any time me or baby went to the doc. I let them know I

was nursing and taking it so they could be careful to make sure any

drugs perscribed for me or baby wouldn't be counteracted by it.

I was still nursing my daughter when she was 18 months (American

Academy of Peds. recommends minimum of a year and of course toddlers

eat other foods and don't nurse as often as infants) when St. 's

Wort was no longer strong enough to manage my deppression. I could't

function due to the deppression and the doc. said at that time there

were no " safe " antideppressants for nursing. So painful as it was I

had to wean her and get back on the meds. Drugs are always changing

and new studies are always coming out. I found La Leche League to be

an awesome Free Resource. Their organization keeps current on all of

the latest research and their leaders often have the updated versions

of the books on the saftey of perscription medications before my docs.

and pharmacists do so if I were you I'd contact La Leche League.

Their books list if a drugs safe for preg. and nursing.

Good luck,
