Hi girls,

Toi here, but just for a few 'cause I'm still feeling a bit icky.

We were able to bring the babies home Wednesday night, and they were

and continue to do well. I, on the other hand, was feeling pretty bad

but attributed it to the anxiety of coming home, checking out of the

hospital, soreness and fatigue from delivering 2 babies, etc.

I continued to feel bad Wed. night, and by Thurs. morning I felt so

awful I was in tears. No extra pains or anything, but my heart was

really beating slowly and I just generally felt terrible, to the

point of tears. I spoke with my doc about my feelings and he told me

to go to the emergency room immediately.

There followed an agonizing night of EKGs, CT scans, and chest x-

rays. My blood pressure had shot up to 189/86 (extremely high for me

since I usually run around 116/60), and my heart rate had slowed to

31 bpm. Docs were baffled since it was rare to see a postnatal with

these symptoms. The ran me through a gamut of tests, thinking

everything from a pituitary tumor to cardio myopathy (sp?).

I was admitted into the hospital, having only spent one night at home

with my babies. My experience was agonizing, since there were no

answers, my blood pressure couldn't be controlled, my heartbeat was

dangerously low, and my newborn babies were at home and I needed to

be with them.

The next morning I was sent for another round of testing including

another CT scan of my head, chest x-rays, and an ultrasound of my

heart. All of these tests were returned with negative results for

problems, so a conference call was made between my doc, a

neurologist, a cardiologist, and a professor of obstetrics. They came

to the conclusion that the Pitocin used to induce my labor had caused

an enormous amount of fluids to be retained in my tissues, which made

my blood pressure shoot up, which made my heart beat slow down.

I was kept another night in the hospital for monitoring and with the

hopes that my bp would come down and stabilize with treatment. With

the blessings of God, things began to improve and I was stable long

enough that they released me yesterday. I am now home where I belong

with my family and my dear, sweet twins. I will be on 2 different bp

meds and potassium for a while and hope that the specialists are

right when they say this should be a temporary condition.

What a scary few days, but things appear to be improving. One thing I

did want to note was that, now that all is said and done, I am

finding out that, although rare, Pitocin can have this type of

negative affect on some patients. There are other induction

alternatives, so it might be wise to just talk with your doc if you

find yourself in a position to be induced.

Thanks again for being such good support and I promise to get some

pics posted as soon as things are settled.

Everyone knows that Pitocin is a synthetic oxytocin...

what most people do NOT know is that the oxytocin is contained within

a preservative called Chlorobutanol...

while the oxytocin is out of your system within 3-5 minutes of

discontinuation...the Chlorobutanol (a muscle relaxant) lasts up to 14

days...

so it wouldn't surprise me if you didn't have a negative reaction to the

Chlorobutanol, which is known to cause cardiac arythmia (the

manufacturers of Pitocin were sued in 2001 in a class action lawsuit and

has been the subject of more than one lawsuit in the past...

I just wonder if you weren't effected by the Chlorobutanol...

Toi,

Congratulations to you on your twins. I sure hope that you are feeling better

soon so you can enjoy them. I never heard of having a reaction to pitocin but I

guess things like that happen. I am glad that you got to the hospital to have it

checked out. Take care of yourself. I will keep you in my prayers.

((((Toi))))) Talk about scary!! It had to be heartbreaking to be away

from your bbs. At least they were able to pinpoint a cause, thank the

Lord. & thank you for the cautionary tale, it goes to show how caring

& giving you are.

God bless & I'll pray you'll bounce back soon, real soon.

PS I've never been a fan of induction myself.
