Guest guest
This is an excellent article about using gentian violet to cure thrush. http://www.bflrc.com/newman/breastfeeding/gentviol.htm This is an excellent general article about thrush: http://www.breastfeed-essentials.com/thrush.html Note please that you use GV once or twice a day for no more than *FOUR* days, or, as some experts recommend, seven days; a second round of treatment can begin after two days " off " . The reason for this is that GV can cause skin ulcerations if used excessively, especially in the baby's mouth. If the GV hasn't cleared up the yeast after two rounds, you either have GV-resistant yeast (possible), or some other problem altogether (also possible). Did you really use GV for " months on end, " Sheila? You got some bad advice somewhere. I don't know why people make such a big deal out of staining. Baby wipes take it mostly off skin (like your fingertips), and Oxiclean and Arm & Hammer Free detergent, used together, seem to completely remove it from fabrics. Of course, you don't want to try this on something precious, but I have nothing stained purple from our two rounds of it. :-) http://www.breastfeed-essentials.com/gvstains.html - note that I am the mom that reported the baby wipes working! LOL Other things that help get rid of thrush: - frequent hand-washing with hot, soapy water - wash your bra every day with hot water - Refrigerated acidophilus/bifidus capsules for you AND the baby; for the baby, open the capsule up and drop the powder on the tongue. I gave Joanne two capsules a day and she seemed to love the way it tasted; I took four a day the whole time I was nursing. - do not feed pumped breastmilk to the baby; use that day only - expose your nipples to the sun for 5-10 minutes a day - add a cup of vinegar to your clothes in the wash - boil any breastpump parts used for 20 minutes a day if pumping with thrush - if you are having sex with your husband, BOTH OF YOU should be treated for yeast infections. Nothing's worse than getting rid of it from mom and baby and then having dad recolonize mom so it starts all over again!! http://www.breastfeedingonline.com/20.html has info on diflucan. Luckily, the GV worked for me, I am VERY allergic to diflucan.
