Guest guest
I am new to this Pregnancy after WLS thing but I am assuming we can't do the GD test because of the sugar water stuff...So what do we do instead??? And is there anything else I am not supposed to do that I should talk to my ob about? I go for my first OB appt tomorrow. Guest guest
My doc is just going to have me check my blood sugars at home with a monitor. That's all they can make me do. Because my son was over 9 pounds they wanted me to do 3 glucose tests, but I refused. Guest guest
The only thing I did NOT do was the diabetes test. I did a 2 hour fasting test instead. I went to get blood drawn while fasting then went to breakfast and went back to get more blood drawn exactly 2 hours after I ate the last bite. I also chose not to do the triple marker or amnio tests since I would not abort anyways and also did not want to worry if I got any false positives. Guest guest
Crystal, I'm betting that others have responded to this, but just in case, I will too. Ask your OB to have a fasting diabetes test done instead of the usual gestational diabetes test done. When I did mine I scheduled my test to be started at 8:30 in the morning. You do the usual don't eat after midnight thing and then don't consume anything in the morning before your test. You can't even drink water as that can screw up your blood sugar tests. Then after your first test is done you go eat a normal breakfast for you. Then 2 hours after your first test, in my case 10:30, you go test again and then your done. My advice to you is to make sure that you tell the lab people that you are having a fasting blood sugar test in place of the regular gestational diabetes test because of your wls. When I had mine done and I told them why the lab lady told me that I needed to eat a breakfast that was 1200 calories or more. I busted out laughing and told her that that was about all the calories I consumed in a DAY and it was impossible for me to eat that much in one meal, LOL! I think there are some papers that you can print out from the files section on the website that you can bring to your OB if he/she gives you problems doing this alternate test from the usual one. Guest guest
Hi Crystal, I am sure someone has already answered this, but I will put in my two cents worth...A fasting blood sugar followed by a two hr pc (after eating) should suffice as a first check against GD. Hopefully your OB will agree and if not, should talk to your surgeon.
