Guest guest
weight has no bearing on how mature (healthy) the babies lungs are. You can have an 8# baby w/ immature lungs, but a 5 pounder with mature lungs. An amniocentesis will tell you if the fetal lungs are mature thereby reducing immeditate and future respiratory distress/disease in the baby. A 6 # baby is a good sise baby. We see 2-3-4 pound babies do well all the time in NICU. It's mostly dependent on fetal lung maturity, not weight, so don't get yourself worked up until you have the amnio (or amniotic fluid tested for maturity). Does this makes sense or have I confused you more? Sheila L & D/NICU RN
