Guest guest
I am not sure about the cigs, but they probably asked about hispaic because diffrent ethnic groups can have diffrent genetic disorders. They usally test every black baby for sickle cell, and their is a test for Jewish people also. I wouldn't worry about it. Good luck. Guest guest
Hello. Question for those of you in the know. The nurse at my 16 week appointment yesterday was filling out the AFP test form for me to take to the lab. They asked me my national origin, if I was hispanic, how many cigarettes I smoked in the last 7 days, history of nural tube defects in my family, etc. I understand the history question, but the # of cigs and the hispanic thing threw me off. Any idea why they ask those two questions? Thanks. Open RNY 4/01 TT/Boob redux 9/02 edd 2/3/

Guest guest
I'm not certain about the cigarettes but I know that certain ethnic groups can/may have false high AFP results but the baby is born fine and healthy and no Downs. Call and ask the nurse why about the cigs. If she doesn't know why, she can find out for you. Sheila L & D/NICU RN

Guest guest
I don't have any answers for you...just my opinion and personal experience. The questions you mentioned were asked of me when first setting up the relationship with my OB. I've taken the test and came through with all negatives...so maybe that's why I wasn't asked those questions again...or maybe it's because he already knew that I AM Hispanic and if I smoke cigarettes. It doesn't sound like you should have any reason for concern. Sounds like he was just getting as much info as possible so that just in case...he'd be able to evaluate a 'positive' situaton more easily and act accordingly. Let us know how the results are. in Detroit
