Breast feeding question

I will be a first time mom in a couple of weeks and I have some

breast feeding questions in which I have recieved conflicting

information. First before you breast feed should you toughen up your

nipples and if so how. I have heard this reduces the sorness you get

at first. Second is about diet. What I have read is that you should

not restrict your diet to insure good nutrition for you and the baby.

(except meds and alchol) Of course you should continue to eat a

higher amount good calories because the baby will be taking it from

you and to drink plenty of fluids. Now my mother and sister swear

that you should restrict your diet to exclude any type of food that

may make you gassy such as some leafy green veggies and beans as well

as any spicy or acidic foodsuch as pizza or Mexican. They say that it

will cause gass and heartburn for the baby. I thought that gas was a

byproduct of the intestional digestion and by the time it is milk

momma already had the gas if that is the case. As for the stomach

acid I thought pretty much the same thing which makes sense to what I

have read. I was wondering if these were old wives tales or accurate.

I just want to do what is best for the baby and personally do not

have bad issues with gas or acid when I eat unlike some post ops. I

will be interested to hear what you experienced mommas have to say.

Wish me luck with this whole thing - at 37 it certianly will be a

change of lifestyle for me. - Diane

Diane,

Wivestales! LOL! No need to toughen up your nipples. The only reason for your

nipples to get sore is if you have baby on with a bad latch. Most important

thing to do is while your in the hospital have the lactation consultant come and

observe you feeding, each and every one if possible. As far as restricting

foods, that really isn't necessary unless your baby is lactose intolerant and

then you may need to eliminate dairy. ALL BABIES ARE GASSY. This can't be said

enough. If you baby is having a lactose problem it will show itself in other

ways than just gas and spitting-up. I wish you a smooth delivery of your little

one! :)
