Homemade Pedialyte Recipe

My new pediatricion told me to give Madison pedialyte for the throwing up and

said you can make it at home for a fraction of the cost. In a 1 qt pitcher

use 1/2 juice ( anything but apple, apple causes diarrhea) and 1/2 water with a

teaspoon of salt. the salt is the electrolyte part ( the sodium).

I DID NOT KNOW THAT :)

Won't the juice already have the sugar needed? Is that maybe why the doc said

only to add salt?

Re: Homemade Pedialyte Recipe

I would be very careful about homemade fluid replacement recipes

with kids - the one your Dr gave you has salt but not sugar. In our

protocols, we have homemade fluid replacements for adults that are

similar to your recipe, but they have sugar and salt in them, both

important for fluid and electrolyte imbalances.

In a pinch, I am sure the recipe is better than some things - like

plain water which people don't realize can be harmful to the balance

when suffering from diarrhea/vomiting...

Gatorade is probably one of the better over the counter things, but

in the middle of the night, clear pop with the bubbles stirred out

of it or 1/2 strength clear fruit juice, chicken broth, popsicles,

etc will do too..

Most kids HATE pedialyte, even when diluted. The preflavoured kind

goes down a bit better, but the best pedialyte product I have seen

are the pedialyte popsicles. Kids seem to like them. Can be hard to

find tho...

Just my 2 cents!

There is alot of natural sugars in the juice, the salt is added as the

electrolyte part.
