Hi all. I have to bring in a sample of my first morning urine into

each pre-natal appt. I asked the nurse what it checked and she said

protein levels, infections and toxemia (???). Can anyone tell me

exactly what they check for--especially the infections part? I know

I should ask more questions of my doctor and his staff, but I feel

like I should know what they are talking about.

Thanks,

They check protein levels because if you are spilling protein in your urine that

can indicate whether you are getting pre-eclamsia (sp?) which can go into

toxemia. Believe me you don't want this, I ended up going into full blown

toxemia right when they started my induction to have my daughter, it was not fun

but thankfully my daughter was fine and I recovered quickly. They also check to

see if you are getting a uninary track infection because sometimes you can have

one and not know it. Get used to this as you will have to do this your entire

pregnancy. Some Ob's office don't make you save your first morning urine and if

it is a hassle for you ask your Ob if you can just give them a sample when you

go in. I always made my appointment with my Ob as late in the day as possible

so my hubby to go with and they never asked me to save my morning urine, I just

gave a sample when I got in the office for my appointment. Hope this clears

your questions up, maybe others can add some info that I have forgotten. :)

the staff " quick dips* the urine to see if you have any protein in

your urine (could indicate beginning of preeclampsia) and it checks

for nitrites and leukocytes (indicating infection).

So basically, she did tell you what they were looking for, you just

didn't know why. lol

the quick, dip also checks for glucose which may indicate beginning

stages of gestational diabetes (or diabetes if you are already diagnosed!)
