Folks,

Don Villarejo requested that I forward the following message. It concerns public input in the process to review the NIOSH-funded agricultural safety and health centers. This examination of the Centers could affect their continuation.

Subject: Request for public comment on NIOSH agriculture workplace safety research

Dear Alice - The purpose of this message is to request that you make the following information available to colleagues via the Migrant Health Research listserve. The National Academy of Sciences (NAS) is presently conducting an official review of the Occupational Safety and Health research programs in Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). This review may play a critical role in decisions by the present Administrations as to whether the programs should continue. The NIOSH programs are the nation's largest single source of financial support for research and intervention on occupational safety and health issues among people who work on farms, funding the regional Agricultural Health and Safety Centers as well as extra-mural grants to specific projects and intra-mural research by NIOSH staff. As a member of the NAS review committee, I urge any and all in the migrant health community to provide public comments on the performance of the NIOSH program. For your convenience, our committee has created a web-based link for the submission of comments, or you can submit written comments via letter or FAX as described in the link. The link is as follows (please scroll to the bottom of that web page to submit comments via the web).http://www8.nationalacademies.org/survey/dels/aff1.htmWarm regards,Don Villarejo, Ph.D.
