Guest guest
Hello everyone. I had the scariest experience last Friday early morning. I delivered my baby 8/21 and after the first week had very light bleeding and then by the next Wed/Thurs it was down to nothing at all. I was pleasantly surprised; I thought I was lucky that it stopped but really it wasn't a good thing! I awoke at 3:10 am last Friday morning to a feeling like when my water broke; there was blood everywhere and I couldn't get into the bathroom fast enough. I sat on the toilet feeling as though I would bleed to death. I was by myself (my husband was away for work) so I called my neighbor to come over and she called the hospital for me. They said to call 911 right away so we did. I ended up having an ultrasound and they saw that I had a retained placenta (if I remember the term correctly!). It was the scariest thing I have ever gone through. I was in the ER for over 4 hours and the bleeding still hadn't stopped, they weren't as concerned as I was I guess but I couldn't even stand up without the blood gushing out all down my legs & the floor-sorry if TMI! The nurse I had was awesome; she said to me, " It is okay honey, that is what a mop is for!! " They were surprised that this happened almost 2 weeks after delivery as the doctor said typically if it happens it is in within the week after delivery. They ended up giving me a shot to make my uterus contract after waiting for it to stop on it's own (hello-I was soaking a pad every 10-15 minutes) and about 1 hour after that was administered; the bleeding started to lighten up thank goodness. I was then on oral meds (the same as the shot) for 3 days. They said if I didn't stop bleeding with the shot I would have a D & C but it didn't come to that; I was able to go home after about 6 hours. I think back now and remember how I didn't have any of the pain like with my son 10 yrs ago when my uterus was contracting after birth or even when I was breastfeeding my son. So I am now back on-line when I can be. my little is thriving and is a blessing! I just keep wondering how I got SO lucky twice. I now have him and my 10 yr old son Jake. I have been trying to get through some of the emails but it is overwhelming at this point so I am going to just wish those who are close to delivery good luck and welcome to all the newcomers, too! Take care everyone and I will try to catch up on posts over the weekend. Ivy Nielsen DOS 11/7/00 Jack Nielsen 8/21/04; 8 lbs. 2 ozs. Jake 9/25/04-PROUD big brother!
