I know this is a silly question, but can someone please tell me exactly what a

behaviorist is and what they do and how may they help my child. Has anyone used

one and how has it helped? Any help is appreciated.

In my child's special class, whenever the teacher hasproblem on behavior of a child, she will consult a behavioralist. Then this person will give advices on how to handle a particular behavior e.g. tantrums, head banging She/he usually knows how to approach a behavior in a systematic way.Therapist involved in ABA (applied behavior analysis) canbe also considered behavioralist. There are so many techniquesused in ABA. The most popular is the discrete trial. It is so systematic and when you say behavior , it couldbe her sleeping pattern, stereotypy (repetitive behavior),speech, compliance, potty training, etc. Almost everything we do, behavior is involved. Now, behavioralist is good in SHAPING those behavior. I'll give youan example... the therapist is counting every minute, how often my child is spinning an object . Theycollect data. They knew the percentage per session. They redirect using a spinning toy to make it look asnormal as possible. They have data totell them if the approach is effective or not. Theyalso teach me how to redirect my child. Anotherexample is tantrum. As a Mom, I also collect thedata. What is the antecedent of the tantrum, what is the behavior and what is my response. They collect the data, interpret the data (e.g. there is 2 to 3 tantrums every 2 hours that lastfor about 10-20 minutes). They shaped this behaviorusing different techniques. One technique theyused is by extinction. How the Mom respond to a certain behavior could aggravate or extinct a behavior.I hope I did not confuse you. ABA using discretetrial, I would say is the best thing that happenedto my child so far. God bless, MhelTo: mb12valtrex From: tnt4nd@...Date: Sat, 16 Jun 2012 21:09:42 -0700Subject: Behaviorist?
