Guest guest
I had entertained this idea as well. I too work for a small company, there are 5 employees and I am one of the three members of the management team. I have my own office, and make my own schedule. However, I also have to consider that I am not the only one in the office. And while *I* may not mind a gassy moment or two and letting a phone call go to vm, but everyone in the office also has to suffer along with me. I decided that I really didn't feel that would be fair. What I was able to work out is to work from home two days a week to help offset some of the costs of day care, which in my area is about $300 a week. As a single mother with no child support, at least not yet, I needed to figure something out. I also contacted the county to find out a list of liscenced in home day care that is significantly cheaper as well. Also I had to find a job at 16 weeks pregnant after moving from Chicago to MN and let me tell you, that was not fun. Do you tell the interviewer you are expecting, what is their maternity leave policy for employees who have been with the company less than a year or even 6 months? (FMLA doesn't even work for those of us who have been in this boat). Keep that in mind when considering leaving your current possition. On the working from home front. Most companies that are going to let you work from home in a TRUE telecommuting fashion will also require that you have child care set up and prove it. ESPECIALLY in a sales environment. If you are on the phone with a client and the baby wakes up and starts screaming clients tend to not like that so much. And no matter how understanding your clientelle, which you can't count on, it is still fairly unprofessional to have children noises in the background. I would suggest exploring your child care options before making any kind of a drastic decision like that. Try the YMCA, lots of times they have great child care, also try local churches, etc. Best of luck, and if you want to bounce ideas off me, then feel free to email me directly. Talk to you soon.
