Glucose Tolerance Testing after WLS

I've read in numerous different sources that Glucose Tolerance

Testing after Gastric Bypass surgery is a no-no. Obviously, I would

think, that drinking sugar water would certainly make me dump. Has

anyone done the test since WLS and how did it go? I've heard there

is some sort of alternative test that can be done...does anyone know

what that test is called? I want to talk to my doctor about it when

I go in a couple weeks. Hubby and I are planning to start trying

soon and I am having a consult with an OB Dr. to discuss which of my

meds I have to come off of before trying and to dicuss being a

gastric bypass patient. Please, any help would be greatly

appreciated. Thanks

I did NOT dot he glucose test but instead did a 2 hour fasting test. It is

where you fast after midnight, go in the morning and have blood drawn, go eat

breakfast and tehn return 2 hours after taking the last bite to draw blood

again.

They had me originally do a 1 hour fasting and they made me draw 1 hour

after my first bite, No wonder it came back High then they made me do the 3

hour

with the Glucose :( And now there trying to make me do it again, Can they

refuse to treat me if I refuse it

on the *home page* of this group is an article about the Glucose

tolerance test and you should print it out and take it in to your 1st

OB appt. I took the test and got sick of course. We aren't supposed to

have over 2gms of glucose at once, and that has 60 in it.

It depends also on the amount of the stomach that was bypassed.

Good luck in hoping you dont get sick if you do go ahead with it.

According to the article on our home page, the results are invalid

anyway b/c of the surgery.

Now I know you do not like testing but this is for the health of your baby

and yourself during pgcy. I dont think the dr's are trying to be mean by doing

this. Your level should be 90 first thing in the morning... 1 hour after you

eat, you level should be 140 or lower. 2 hours after you eat it should be

120 or lower.. and so on... if your levels are elevated, you would want to take

the proper precaustions. I understand about not wanting to do the GTT with

the sugar stuff, but I would really do the fasting just to be sure... Thats

JMO though.

Since I am already Type II diabetic, I presume that I

will not have to take this test.

If asked, I will refuse and just get a HbA1C test to

cover it. The HbA1C is a blood test given to

diabetics to test their blood sugars over a period of

the past three months. There is a range of responses,

but some are much better than others. No drinking of

sugar water is involved.
