Guest guest
I am hearing about the University of Cincinnati. What other hospitals are the best to treat pancreatitis. What determines if you are a candidate for a transplant. How long do you have to suffer with CP before it is advisable. Can someone expect to have a normal life after wards? What about rejections> Are steroids used to prevent rejection? Thanks for any and all information. Love and prayers,
Guest guest
Hi , I don't know where you are, but for anyone in the UK, the Royal Liverpool University Hospital is a good centre for the teratment of pancreatic conditions. They do pancreatic surgery, including total pancreatectomy - but not islet cell transplant. As to how long you need to have had CP before you can be considered for surgery - i think that is based on individual assessment. I'm not sure about rejection. I'm sure there are many others on this board who can tell you about that. I can't see why you would have problems with rejection, or need steroids when it is your own islets that are transplanted. I have had a total pancreatectomy - without Islet cell transplant in 2000. Apart from the occasional problem, my quality of life is much improved. Obviously i am a diabetic and require insulin. I work 30 hours a week, shifts, inculding nights. If you want any more info please contact me. Sue (UK)
Guest guest
, Hospitals in the Southeast and Central states that are well known for their pancreatitis treatments are: Hopkins Medical Center, Baltimore, land The Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland, Ohio The University of Cincinnati, Cincinnati, Ohio Indiana University Medical Center, Indianapolia, Indiana Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), ton, SC Duke University Medical Center, Durham, North Carolina The Mayo Clinic, ville, Florida Only a few of these mentioned perform the Total Pancreatectomy with Auto Islet Transplant. To the best of my knowledge, only Hopkins and The University of Cincinnati are now certified to perform this procedure. The TP-ICT is also performed at Fairview Medical Center on the campus of the University of Minnesota, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Dr. Sutherland, the physician who " invented " the procedure back in the early 70's, still performs it at this hospital, and is the most highly skilled physician capable of doing this surgery. I have heard of it being done at a hospital in Chicago, also, but I don't know the name of the facility, and the patient that I read about that had it done there ended up having very serious and untreatable complications. It's also done somewhere in California, but I don't know which hospital it is. I hope this information helps. With love, hope and prayers, Heidi Heidi H. Griffeth South Carolina Rep. Guest guest
> > Thank you Heidi. You have so much information available as soon as someone asks. You are a good person. I hope we get some answers soon. His pain is increasing, his kidneys not functioning properly, he can't urinate most every other day and self caths, his platelets continue to fall and it seems the GI doctors, the urologist and the PCP cannot decide who is going to figure this out, so they just blame the other. I am about to explode. is afraid I will get people mad at him and I try to explain that he has to take control of his care or they'll just leave him in bed to rot away. I will go see his doctor tomorrow if they don't call him with some answers. Thanks again for everything. Love and prayers, LInda
