Guest guest
Hi Kaye, I am not a nurse but I have some knowledge in a condition that is considered to be an coagulation problem but has clotting as one manifestation of it. It is known as anti-cardiolipin syndrome or anti-phospholipid syndrome. Basically it can test out as a anti-coagulation problem but women who have it have increased risks of thrombolisms (clots) that result in miscarriages, strokes and other problems (men get the same exept the miscarriages). It is an auto-immune disease that can be associated with lupus and others, but can sometimes be seen by itself. There is alot of work going on to characterize the whole picture but it has only been relatively recent that it has been recognized as a separate entity. Blood tests to diagnose it have only been around for the last 15 years or so. In the past, I think, it has been referred to as a bleeding disorder. This may be something that your hematologist will look for, as this specialty is familiar with the whole clinical picture that is associated with anti-cardiolipin syndrome. I am just offering this information in case you encounter this during your visit or blood draws. Laurie
