Thanks, Ang Dear Ang, We contacted Great Plains Laboratories regarding the video conference you watched with Dr. Shaw. Dr. Shaw is currently out of the country. We spoke with , one of his associates, who was quite surprised to hear Dr. Shaw " shot down " SCD. She said that personally SHE believes in SCD and knows of many that have been helped by SCD. We will get in touch with Dr. Shaw to discuss this further upon his return. I have archived many, many success reports verifying the positive effects of SCD for their ASD children and can only imagine Dr. Shaw may not have had an opportunity to know about that or to hear the praise Dr. Sydney Baker has accorded to SCD. SCD requires patience, compliance and commitment. Are you dismissing SCD on a single presentation? I suggest you go to the Autism Research site and access their online radio webcasts from numerous DAN Conferences about dietary intervention for autism. Many distinguished and well qualified health professionals are on board with the gut-brain connection theory that is the basis for SCD. If you have doubts that cannot be assuaged by fact than you are obviously not ready to commit again. But take the time to research further before discounting the effectiveness of SCD for adults and children please. We have had people who did not do SCD properly, failed when combining it with prohibited protocols, but who returned to try again and they succeeded. They never felt they had gone backwards. The road of SCD is not guaranteed to always be straight and smooth, but be assured of one thing. SCD is not " going backwards! " Carol F. SCD 7 years. Guest guest
Hi Ang and Carol, I think that there is a misunderstanding here, Ang seems comitted to SCD but someone else is trying to change her mind. Ang just wanted our support.. Ang, I am sending you my support. SCD is a great diet,; do not jump into any other diet until you have spent a lot of time researching the archives of other diets. You will then be convinced that SCD rules! Guest guest
I felt the need to show our support to parents that are as new as we are to this diet My son has been on it for 19 days. We have seen the lows and the highs that have been predicted with this diet. It has been frustrating and tough at times, but it is also one of the best things I feel I can do for my son. We do not have a doctor that supports this diet and I have heard both the good and the bad reasons for or against this diet. I can tell you that any diet that shows me how to prepare food in a safe and nutritious way has value. It may not cure my son, but he is eating foods that I myself had not considered eating (yes, we are doing the diet with him). It has challenged everything I knew about cooking and providing nutrients for myself and my family. Regardless if SCD is the best diet out there, it has been a good choice for us. Go with your gut, not what some " expert " says! Guest guest
I agree, and I'm surprised at how many parents don't have a clue about dietary intervention...or don't believe in it...even with kids who have had a DX of ASD for some time. I met a family tonight at iel's first theraputic horse back riding instructions, and I noticed the child eating supper before the lesson in the observation room. He was eating a total typical meal, and he was probably eight or ten years old. I was really surprised. I feel so blessed to have found SCD, and always look for opportunity to share it with others. I often wonder, too, if parents don't believe in dietary intervention because they haven't found SCD or didn't strictly comply with it for long enough(and introducing foods in the proper manner) to feel that it had any merits. We have a friend who is in the research dept. of one of the major banks in the country. I'd be willing to ask him if he would have time and be willing to somehow set up a survey on the web for SCD, but Mimi, I need to know what questions you might want asked on the survey. I wouldn't have a clue how to set something up, but perhaps he would. I'm at least willing to ask. Let me know what you're looking for. Guest guest
Meleah, Your assumption is right on the nose, thanks! Carol, pelase do not get me wrong, and am an advocate of this diet for my child. When I started this 1 ½ years ago I did all my research and did it right. I believe that it was much more beneficial than the GFCF. I am not talking about taking my daughter off this diet at all; I just wanted some feedback from the community on the subject so that I may be able to sleep better at night. To have the doctor that owns both the supplement and lab testing companies which I have been doing business with for years now and who also works closely with DAN and speaks at their conferences knock me down on my diet so fast and strong just made me feel sad! He also did it very publicly in the middle of his web conference with many other people listening. Between ABA, speech, OT, chelation, behavior, socialization, and vitamin therapy plus cooking and trying to keep up with bills and new research sometimes I need to hear the words of educated people to help keep me motivated. As for Dr. Shaw, I can absolutely guarantee that he spoke these words to me, as they were burned in my head! If you can get a copy of that conference and or educate him better to change his view on SCD that would be awesome! Maybe you could even get his to sell the book on his site! The guy has a lot of influence in the autism community so I would love to see him become more of an advocate by becoming more educated. As for me, I love you all and negative or positive feedback is always welcomed. I am neither an expert nor a doctor just a mom that loves her daughter and wants to do all she can to make life better. Sometime you just need a little help from your friends!
