Well, I am finally getting around to summing up what Dr Bishop (at Mayo

ville) said.

To recap, I had an endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) on 3/10 because I had two lymph

nodes

that were slightly enlarged. While checking those (which came back completely

clear via

needle biopsy) they saw signs of chronic pancreatitis.

The EUS showed, in short: no calcification. Some scarring. I am having no pain

(except

after reading things on the net, I felt quite nauseous for a while afterward :-)

). My lipase

is slightly elevated.

When I spoke with her, Dr. Bishop (another Dr was there too) said that this

doesn't impact

life expectancy. Pain management may be an issue in the future. She no enzyme

replacement needed now and no diet changes are needed now. She said that over

the

course of a lifetime (I am in my 30s) I'd have about a 25-30% chance of becoming

diabetic

due to this.

I drink perhaps 2 drinks per month, but it was recommended to stop that even,

which is

not a problem.

The report says the following, with my comments in []: " views of the pancreas

showed

lobularity [is that normal?], hyperechogenic foci and stranding [ditto],

irregular border, and

heterogenicity consistent with chronic pancreatitis. There were no cysts,

dilated ducts, or

calcifications visualized. Findings were present throughout the head, neck,

body, and tail

regions. "

The things I am going to ask her next time I speak with her are. If anyone

wishes to chime

in with suggestions, please feel free:

1. To explain the report above and what it means.

2. To ask if diet changes could help stop or slow the pancreatitis.

3. To ask what else could help stop/slow it (e.g. anti-oxident etc)

4. What the hereditary pancreatitis marker check they did showed (should be

about 2 more

weeks for its results).

5. What is the best way to support pancreatitis research? (I was on the board

for PanCan

(pancan.org) from 1999-end of 2002 helping to support research on pancreatic

cancer,

but I'd like to do something here too.) I know of Dr. Whitcomb at Pitt

and will

probably donate more there, but what else? Anyone know about

http://www.american-

pancreatic-association.org/ ?

6. Is there any way to tell how long this has been going on? (I suspect at

least a couple of

years since my Lipase has been slightly (< 5% above normal) elevated for a

while).

I tell you, after reading a lot about it, I am still nervous and when I dwell on

it, my stomach

feels upset, but only when I dwell. For example, nothing had bothered me for 10

days

until I started typing this and re-reading the report, after 20 minutes reading

and typing

though my stomach is not feeling so good.

I am glad you have answers. I just got some myself and it is such a good

feeling to finally have someone understand isn't it! I hope you don't get sick

feeling again.

My docs recommended diet change as soon as I was diagnosed 2 years ago. They

said lowfat, no alcohol, and be careful with certain types of protein. I take

enzymes and an anti-spasmodic and anti-nausea meds. I know this probably

didn't help much but I tried! LOL!

Take care,

best of everything; they just make the best of everything that comes along

their way. "
