Guest guest
My son's GI doctor wants to check his " dissacharidases. " She did not explain this, it was in an e-mail and the next e-mail I sent asking her to explain the test, I received an out-of-office reply. Does anyone know, will this test actually show if a person has an inability to break down carbohydrates? If not, is there such a test? I am just curious where she is going with this, as I have not really discussed SCD with her. - --------------------------------- Ahhh...imagining that irresistible " new car " smell? Elaine was very wary of some testing. How much is this test going to cost? Carol F.
Guest guest
I was just wondering if she was also suspecting what those on this list suspect, or if there is some other purpose of the test. I am not familiar with it as we have not previously had it run. She is wanting to do a bunch of other tests too (insurance will cover). This is one doctor I really respect, as she was my daughter's GI doctor throughout her abdominal surgeries and we met many of her patients on the GI floor when we were in-patient. There was one boy who had been hospitalized almost continuously for his 2 years of life, until she took over and pushed the pathologists to look for different things after she scoped him. He had been at 3 top Children's Hospitals and had 3 previous scopes by other GI docs which had turned up nothing, yet this kid remained on TPN/lipids and also a J-tube and in the hospital. Turns out he had something very rare that she dared to look for. She got him on real foods and home in a matter of weeks after she took over, so I am more than willing to have her explore, as my son is " atypical " in so many different ways. Back to the test, however, all I can find on-line about carbohydrate intolerance seems limited to lactose. I was just wondering if there was more value to the tests other than dx-ing lactose intolerance. She will be back in town next week, so I will eventually get the scoop, but I am impatient! - carolfrilegh wrote: > > My son's GI doctor wants to check his " dissacharidases. Guest guest
My daughter had that test and then later I found that it was not a reliable test in terms of accuracy for positive (having the deficiency). I put her on SCD anyway and she healed completely from her GI troubles. Cathy Re: dissacharidases test > > My son's GI doctor wants to check his " dissacharidases. Guest guest
Can you explain what the test is supposed to do? If the test did show the deficiency, do doctors recommend dietary changes or something else? Just curious where my doctor may be going with her testing. - demillereed@... wrote: My daughter had that test and then later I found that it was not a reliable test in terms of accuracy for positive (having the deficiency).
