Guest guest
Okay wmy 4-year-old son has been on the SCD diet since 3-24-07. He is eating butternut squash, chicken, some pear, and some zuchinni. I alternate between S. boullardii and Nystatin and I also give him acidophilus 3 times daily. He is still having loose BM's that look like undigested squash-most days. He has 1 BM per day(I give him a dulcolax supppository). Last week for 3 days he had a lot of gass and some diarrhea, but I had also increased the nystatin, so I guess it was a die-off reaction, seeing as he had two great days at school after that. He had two great days at school, but when he gets home he's all over the place-so to speak. Those two great days he had he ate turkey from whole foods instead of fresh chicken from the grocery store. I guess Since we have been seeing a lot of yeast problems and no real consistent improvement, something is still irritating his colon and causing him to have yeast flair ups.....Do you think it could be the chicken? Before SCD he ate mostly beef, now he is eating chicken ALL-DAY-LONG. what do you think?
Guest guest
Several things come to mind. You might want to do a little rotation with the meat. That helped us. We do chicken one day, then beef the next day, then pork, turkey etc. It helps us. Little regressions are a part of healing. Everyone in my family had regressions at one month, three months, six months, one year and two years. Right after the regressions, we had huge gains. I'm not sure about your yeast protocol. I've never used nystantin, so I'm not the person to ask, but the combination might be unnecessary. I'm also wondering why you are giving him the suppository. Boulardii can cause gas and constipation in some people. Turkey is difficult. Turkey from Wholefoods should be ok, but are we talking cooked or fresh that you cooked at home? We have had a lot of trouble with turkey additives, even the ones with only salt and water. Hope that helps. jessicaclarkasd <no_reply > wrote: Okay wmy 4-year-old son has been on the SCD diet since 3-24-07. He is eating butternut squash, chicken, some pear, and some zuchinni. Guest guest
We are giving him the suppository because he was holding it for 3 days at a time....His gastroenterologist was wanting us to give him Miralax 6 times the normal dosage....but this created a Megacolon..His colon was 55mm, and within two weeks of starting S. boullardii and probiotics, it was down to 30 mm. H e was on like 60 grams of fiber a day.. He simply just doesn't go have a BM usually, so i give him the laxative...It's just easier that way, and he says it's safe.... a couple of months ago i took him off of grains, and he ate mostly beef. He ate a lot of fresh fruit (mostly berries) and he had bms almost every day (on his own)-and they were normal looking. I am just confused. I don't know what's causing his problems....It's still up and down....and he isn't eating grains, carrots, bananas. All he drinks is water, also. I was using ground turkey breast from whole foods.....but we live two hours away...so...we haven't been to whole foods in a long time... anyone else have reactions to chicken? thanks Okay wmy 4-year-old son has been on the SCD diet since 3-24-07. > > He is eating butternut squash, chicken, some pear, and some zuchinni. > > I alternate between S. boullardii and Nystatin and I also give him > acidophilus 3 times daily. Guest guest
Yes, but it depends on where you buy the chicken, for the same reasons. Pure chicken isn't a problem, but here are some things I have learned: If a chicken crosses over a state line, they dip it in tetracycline. So locally grown is best. Sometimes they add sugar with the water and salt. Brined chicken contains sugar, and this means the very high end stuff. Wow...I think you are going to love SCD Mommy. Healing really does take time and lots of it, but it is so worth it. You've been through hell, and so has your boy! What a mom! Have you seen Judy Gorman's speech on the DAN! webcasts? I love it and I think you will too. jessicaclarkasd <no_reply > wrote: We are giving him the suppository because he was holding it for 3 days at a time....His gastroenterologist was wanting us to give him Miralax 6 times the normal dosage....but this created a Megacolon..His colon was 55mm, and within two weeks of starting S. boullardii and probiotics, it was down to 30 mm. Guest guest
When I reread what you posted here I realized that you may not be on SCD yet. Is that true? If you are not, don't wait. SCD is what saved my family. But if you are here are some ideas: Whenever we have a die off reaction, or an accidental infraction, or a flare up for any reason, I go back to the intro diet for a day or two. That helps calm the whole system down. Also, I keep a food diary. Nothing helps as much as a food diary! I can pinpoint the culprit food without any trouble at all. You may have added a food that he is reacting to. Remember that we can have delayed sensitivity to foods, meaning we can have them on monday but have a reaction on wednesday or thursday. That's why a food diary is so important imo. It makes it easy to see patterns in reactions and diet. If he is having a yeast die-off, and he well may be, you might want to try adding activated charcoal. If you haven't done so yet, please get Breaking the Vicious Cycle by Elaine Gottschall and read it. I also think the videos by Judy Gorman and Elaine Gottschall on the DAN! webcast are well worth the time. jessicaclarkasd <no_reply > wrote: This chicken said it contains just water...up to 5% retained water....the butcher said there wasn't anything else in it.....I am just very confused....Should i stop adding new vegetables until the stools firm up...A couple of days there was even chunks of undigested meat.....obviously his stomach is very inflamed..I need advice....I am just about ready to rip every bit of my hair out....i just don't know how much more I can take....I am going to schedule another appointment with the gastroenterologist...Any advice from ANYONE would be greatly appreciated....THANKS!! Guest guest
We are on the SCD diet....I keep a detailed food journal also...We have seen good behavior, and die off symptoms followed by 1 or 2 GREAT days, and then it seems like he begins to have yeast flair ups- but he was doing this also, when we implemented an aggressive antifungal regimen while he was on GFCF diet...it seems like there is no change in behavior...and the other day...yestersay to beexact, I added fermented cabbage juice using the SCD starter. Today he is crying at school, holding his ears...acting like something IS REALLY wrong....I mean..he is eating CHICKEN, Butternut squash, and some pears.....I am just worried he IS SENSITIVE TO chicken, and that it's irritating his intestines.....some people are allergic to different types of meat...So, shouldn't I PULL THE CHICKEN AND use a different meat to test it? Guest guest
Absolutely. If you think that the chicken is causing a problem, then pull it. Substitute a different meat. You may even want to use a grassfed meat because it will probably just be a " purer " meat. They are more expensive, but it might be worth it to try that for a few days to see if it helps. Guest guest
Of course! Try it and see if it helps! There's no danger, so why not? : D We had trouble digesting all kinds of things in the beginning. My daughter couldn't digest turkey for the first eight months. I couldn't digest zukinii, oranges and orange juice, spaghetti squash and nuts of any kind for over a year and a half, and then, only with the addition of No Fenol. Go for it Momma. You know what you're doing! jessicaclarkasd <no_reply > wrote: We are on the SCD diet....I keep a detailed food journal also...We have seen good behavior, and die off symptoms followed by 1 or 2 GREAT days, and then it seems like he begins to have yeast flair ups- but he was doing this also, when we implemented an aggressive antifungal regimen while he was on GFCF diet...it seems like there is no change in behavior...and the other day...yestersay to beexact, I added fermented cabbage juice using the SCD starter. Guest guest
Hi jessica, << So, shouldn't I PULL THE CHICKEN AND use a different > meat to test it? >> Yes, if he seems to be reacting to the chicken. Remove it and try a different meat. I had a problem with regular storebought chicken. It didn't have any additives but I was reacting to the hormones and feed that the chicken were given. I was able to tolerate organic,, hormone free chicken. Sheila, SCD Feb. 2001, UC 23yrs mom of and
