Does anyone know why grapefruit juice is only okay if fresh? Is this one of

those juice items where it might be okay if the manufacturer states there are no

additives? It states that canned and frozen are illegal. Is bottled a no no?

Grapefruit juice that is fresh is incredibly tart. In order for companies to

make it palatable they would undoubtedly add sugar. I would just juice my own.

Better tasting too.

We just drink so much of it, I'm trying to save time! That's all anybody ever

drinks in the family -- an " Italian soda " with GF juice and mineral water. I'm

wondering where I would even keep all of the grapefruits on hand to juice them

daily.

, bottled is a no no unless it's on our legal foods list posted on our

website: and also

read this from the " SCD Foods " link.

Homemade vs. Storebought

There are a number of reasons why homemade items are necessary for SCD™ instead

of

the " convenient " store-bought items.

The 2% rule: There is a rule that allows some ingredients that constitute less

than 2% of

the total weight or volume unnecessary to report on the ingredient list. This

can include

sugar and other illegal ingredients, since these do not fall under the list of

usual allergens.

Store-bought products often pass through many sets of hands before they are put

in the

final package. For example, some juice concentrates can be made in one plant and

then

shipped to another plant where water is added and then they are bottled. The

final

producer can " honestly " say they did not add any illegals but what about the

first producer

of the concentrate. The original concentrate does not even have to be made in

the same

country as the final bottler.

Commercial producers are not bound to report some of the ingredients listed in

their

foods. They can use processing aides, enzymes etc., that are used in the

production of the

food but are not technically an ingredient. When you make foods for your

children you

know " exactly " what you are putting into it.

Wouldn't you assume because we can use Tropicana Fresh Squeezed Orange Juice,

their

Gragepfruit Juice would be OK? Well it is not which justifies insistence on

reading labels

and contacting companies.

Ingredients:

pure pasteurized ruby red grapefruit juice, filtered water, white grapefruit

juice

concentrate, clarified pineapple juice concentrate, cochineal extract (color),

natural flavor,

ascorbic acid (vitamin C)

My label just says

Ingredients: Organic Pink Grapefruit Juice

That's why I am wondering if it might be okay with some additive-free brands,

or if there was something else about the grapefruit juicing process that I

should know about!

Yes, I get this, but some storebought juices are okay -- just wondering if there

was something special about grapefruit juice that makes it illegal from the

bottle.

I think I explained it pretty thoroughly. Weus the bottled juices listed on the

website and

no others. I can't think of anything to add in explanation but the bottom line

is that we

can't and sjouldn't!

Hi ,

<< Does anyone know why grapefruit juice is only okay if fresh? >>

Bottled, shelved grapefruit juice (GfJ) is usually from concentrate and

this would be illegal. As per Elaine's instructions in BTVC OJ and

grapefruit juice from concentrate are both illegal. It often has sugar

or other illegals added.

If you can find refrigerated commercial GfJ that is " not made from

concentrate " ; has no illegals and you get a letter (not email) from the

company a letter to back up statements on the juice label,

specifically, that no sweeteners have been added than it would be

legal. (Don't forget to dilute the commercial GfJ)

So, with GfJ you have two options: Juice yourself or do a

little 'detective work " to determine/ensure legality of commercial pure

GfJ.
