my 10 mos old twins did not do well on any formula except nutramigen

and pregestemil which are easily digestible. i still don't like giving

it to them with an ingredient list a mile long with illegals. there

stools are firm now but they are still having yeasty problems (burning

red butt rashes and cradle cap). i want to put them on the intro diet

along with the rest of us this time but not sure how to do it if they

are still on that illegal formula. they love the goat yogurt smoothies

i have been giving them to drink everyday so i was hoping to ween them

off the formula and give them a variety of other beverages supplemented

with probiotic, supernuthera, calcium and codliver oil. will they need

an extra iron supplement? is it too soon to take them off formula? the

doc says i should keep them on it for 1 yr.

I don't know too much about this and Sheila can jump in and tell me if I am

wrong but this is what I would do. I would keep them on the formula whilst you

do the intro and slowly over the next 2 months (cause that will be a year,

right?) wean them off the formula. Keep up the smoothies and go from there. Its

only 2 more months---I know its hard but I would be hard pressed to get them off

the formula yet. They are still pretty young. Just remember, I am no doctor. :)

I would also not give any iron supplement. As their diet increases on SCD, I

think they should be getting enough and they don't need the added compromise on

their gut. iron is bad...at least orally :)

My pediatrician has told me for six years now with number four baby on the way

that you can begin introducing dairy to your child at about 10 months. He says

just do it slowly, and watch for intolerance/allergy. I think you won't have a

problem if you use the goat yogurt. You know what kind of stuff to look for as

a way that their bodies will demonstrate intolerance, so I'd go ahead and do it.

Please let us know how it goes. This could be helpful to other parents with

children nearing one year in the future. Elaine wasn't keen on giving an iron

supplement. I actually haven't giving my 2 year old(next Thursday) any vitamin

supplements at all because we started SCD right at his first birthday. He has

been doing it, too, and I'm not concerned about deficiency. He's healthy and

growing well, and I think SCd gives more nutrition than a regular diet ever

would. I am look at what most toddlers and small children eat. Of course, they

need vitamins because all they're eating is chicken nuggets and French fries.

Actually, I do give him supplements. I take that back. I just didn't think of

it because I don't give those baby ones that you buy in the store. I give him

Nordic Naturals Complete Omega, Kirkman Everyday Children's Multivitamin, and

his acidopholus. Since starting SCD last year right at this time, my kids

almost never get sick. They get maybe one cold per year, and one flu like bug

per year. I guess I should say that's hat happened this year.

Hi Ellen,

<< my 10 mos old twins ...> stools are firm now but they are still

having yeasty problems (burning

> red butt rashes and cradle cap). >>

Are you using any cream on the sore bottoms. Zinc oxide etc...? A

doctor may prescribe nystatin cream if they feel it is a yeasty rash.

<< i want to put them on the intro diet

> along with the rest of us this time but not sure how to do it if

they > are still on that illegal formula.>>

What foods are they eating?

<<they love the goat yogurt smoothies >>

What are you putting in their smoothies?

<< will they need > an extra iron supplement? >>

Oral iron isn't so good (hard on the bowel). If they are eating

meats and some vitamin C foods they may not need iron. Are they low

in iron?

<<is it too soon to take them off formula? the

> doc says i should keep them on it for 1 yr. >>

There is a formula in BTVC for children less than 1 year. If using

honey for children less than 1 tear old honey neds to be sterilized,

pasteurized alone isn't sufficient to destroy spores in the honey.

You'd need a pressure cooker to do this. I have a small stove top

pressure cooker which is pretty easy and quick to use. (Great for

making bone broths etc....) I think there may be another formula

recipe also? in the archives..?
