can i put a drop of honey into the goat yogurt for the 10 month old

twins to sweeten it? if they are on the intro for 2 days this may be

the only way to get them to drink it. i thought that honey was not a

good idea due to botulism for babies under 1yr. would i have to boil it

first? i would prefer to add it in cold.

Infants under one year are not to have honey.

I have always heard from my pediatrician not to give honey to a child under one

year, but I never asked why. I don't know if it would be safe or not.

If they children are small for their age, you have to wait longer.

It's a body mass issue... enough mass so that the toxin will not be

overwhelming.

For a child under twelve months of age, there is a risk of botulism from eating

honey and

it should be avoided.

what can i sweeten the goat yogurt with for the intro diet if i can't

add honey for the babies?

also, i live in the low country in south carolina and the closest whole

foods is 2 hrs away in charleston. i think my 3 yr old reacted to the

potassium sorbate in the pressed apple cider so i am hesitant to buy it

again. i might have bought the wrong kind so i will try again.

Some say there is no issue with raw honey (you have to make your own choice on

that). Some pediatricians still advise adding Karo syrup to baby formula for

constipation I hear, and that also presents the same risk as honey prior to age

1 -- go figure.

Honey (as well as other sweeteners --corn syrup & maple syrup) is also

potentially extremely dangerous for infants. This is because botulism

spores are among the few bacteria that survive in honey. While these

spores are harmless to adults, an infant's digestive system is not yet

developed enough to destroy them and the spores could potentially

cause infant botulism. For this reason, it is advised that neither

honey, nor any other sweetener, should be given to children under the

age of 18 months.

I don't think too many people do take that chance!!! Anywhere you read about

raw honey/babies, it states something to the effect that " it should not cause

the problems of pasturized honey with infants, but it still might be best to

avoid it anyway. " How many people are going to let their baby be the guinia

pig?

Unless you " sterilize " the honey you shouldn't give it to them. The

generally rule of thumb is raw or pasteurized honey should not be fed

to children under 12 months of age.

Boiling the honey will not sterilize it. You'd have to sterilize it

under pressure in a pressure cooker. If sterilized properly this will

destroy the botulinum spores.
