Guest guest
Thanks for the info and links. My son has not EVER had antibiotics in his entire life EVER so that is definitely NOT the reason he has this. We don't know why he has it. It is a giant mystery. The 2 antibiotics recommended are " black label " antibiotics which apparently means they are carcinogenic and can potentially shut down the liver. Our DAN doctor has instead prescribed S. Boulardii. He has had many patients with C Dif. use S. Boulardii successfully in fighting C. Diff. It is a very high dosage. We are starting out at 6 caps a day and will eventually work our way up as we need to. I think the info on C. Diff in BTVC should be re-considered. Those antibiotics recommended are ugly and dangerous and perhaps appropriate for some individuals, but according to our DAN, the S. Boulardii has been equally successful in fighting C. Diff. At any rate, I am not about to give my little 2 year old a carcinogenic " black label " antibiotic unless it comes down to having no other options at all. I believe our DAN dr and that he truely has had complete success treating C. Diff with high doses of S. Boulardii.
Guest guest
I would be curious what you think the cause might be. We have never done ABX either and my son's GI tract is a mess. I often wonder if it wasn't the early exposure to a chlorinated pool as a newborn. I would try the S. Bourardii as well. The only studies on that yeast used it WITH an antibiotic, so there is not good data on its effectiveness alone (which doesn't mean it wouldn't work). Good luck. - mamanme2 wrote: Thanks for the info and links. My son has not EVER had antibiotics in his entire life EVER so that is definitely NOT the reason he has this. We don't know why he has it. Guest guest
Hi , Here are a few posts where C. diff and the success of S. boulardii are discussed. I've been taking S. boulardii fo a few months. I had to gradually work up to my current dose. (I use Kirkman's S. boulardii - it has no illegals) http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/pecanbread/message/31914 http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/pecanbread/message/31914 http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/pecanbread/message/55707 Although treatment with antibiotics is the normal reason for C. diff overgrowth other things can cause it. The antibiotics listed on the BTVC page for C. diff are the current traditional " medical/pharmaceutical " treatments. I was given flagyl while in hospital a few years ago and had a violent reaction. For some people taking flagyl saved their life.... Sheila, SCD Feb. 2001, UC 23yrs mom of and << Thanks for the info and links. Guest guest
, Just read this email from you--would you mind sharing your DAN's name (and location)? I hate having her on the antibiotic--she has been since last July if you can believe it! She does take S. Boulardii also--my insistence from reading SCD lists--but, only 1 or 2 a day. Thanks!
