Guest guest
I thought I would share some good news. Our 18 yo son, diagnosed with severe, non-verbal, low-functioning autism has been on SCD since 9/06 (eight months now). It has been hard. We tried some foods too early. We gave him fruit when he really was not able to handle the resulting yeast overgrowth. He has lost weight, he has been sad, he has been screamy--all at times, but still: He has had better eye contact (although he was not bad in that area before). He has been able to do some things better than he has before--putting gloves on correctly the first time--two times in a row!!; he has seemed to have some improvement in autonomy--walking by himself, refusing my efforts to keep him right beside me--but he has behaved well--staying up with me while I was shopping, not grabbing things. This might seem little, to many, but to those of us with this kind of kid, this is huge. Life would be much easier for us if he were able to be out in the community without behaving poorly. This week, he had gone with his staff person to a sheltered workshop, where he stayed for a while and then he took her by the arm and led her out the door--no screaming, no whining, no eloping. He was ready to go, so he did. He also has seemed to understand things we say much better and more readily. Instead of having to repeat things several times, he seems to understand the first time--and do it. So, although we have 18 years of bad bowel to correct, I believe we are on the road. My husband began to get discouraged with 's struggle (and mine) and was talking about putting him back on a regular diet (SAD). I resisted and said we were not going back. It was very satisfying to point out 's progress to him and although he is not yet fully convinced as am I, he has agreed that we are seeing progress. , mom to --------------------------------- Ahhh...imagining that irresistible " new car " smell?
